SMCC Softball Falls 6-2 to Saint Johns River State at World Series

SPARTANBURG, SC ---

The 11th-seeded South Mountain Community College softball team (47-14) lost 6-2 to sixth-seeded Saint Johns River State College (FL) on Wednesday, May 20, in the opening round of the 2026 NJCAA Division II World Series at Tyger River Park in Spartanburg, SC. Sophomore Alyssa Jemio and Leah Alcala produced RBI singles for the Cougars, but the Vikings took advantage of some close calls and used three home runs to push past SMCC.

The Cougars jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Sophomore Jerzey Jarvis singled to center to start the game and moved to second after sophomore Sadie Su'a drew a walk. Jemio then drove in Jarvis with a single to center, and with two outs, Jemio scored on an RBI single from Alcala.

The Vikings hit solo home runs in the first and third to tie the game. In the fifth, they took advantage of a questionable call to start the frame and wound up with a triple. From there, three runs would come across to put them ahead 5-2. They added a solo home run in the sixth to seal the victory.

Jemio went 2 for 3 with a run and an RBI to lead the offense. Freshman GG Moreno and sophomore Tazia Blake added base hits in the loss.

Su'a took the loss in the circle to fall to 17-4 on the season. She allowed seven hits, four earned runs, and three walks over five innings of work. Sophomore Aryka Ortega tossed the sixth for SMCC and allowed one hit and one run to go with one strikeout.

SMCC will face the winner of the Louisburg-Bryant & Stratton Game on Thursday, May 21, at 11:30 am ET / 8:30 am MT (AZ) time. The winner of that contest will advance to face the loser of the Kirkwood CC-Des Moines Area CC game at 2 p.m., also on Thursday, May 21, at 7 p.m.
