SMCC Softball Sweeps Conference Doubleheader at Glendale CC

The South Mountain Community College softball team (7-6, 6-4 ACCAC Division II) swept an ACCAC DII doubleheader at Glendale CC on Tuesday, Feb. 17, winning game one 7-4 and taking game two 12-1 (five innings). Sophomore Aryka Ortega turned in a complete-game performance in the circle, and sophomore Sadie Su'a and freshman Leah Alcala smashed home runs in the game-one victory. In the second game, Alcala and sophomore Kaeliann Glass slashed doubles, sophomore Alyssa Jemio had four RBIs, and sophomore Jerzey Jarvis stole four bases to help lift the Cougars to the sweep.
 
Game One Recap
 
The Cougars built a lead with multiple runs in three innings and held off a Gaucho rally to post the 7-4 victory.
 
In the second, sophomore Tazia Blake scored on a wild pitch and sophomore Brooklynn Wishart added a two-out RBI single to bring in sophomore Eva Harrison.
 
The Gauchos tied the game with two runs in the second, but sophomore Azlynn Madrid threw out the go-ahead run at the plate to end the inning.
 
Su'a broke the tie with her fourth home run of the season in the fifth, a solo shot to center. Blake then picked up a two-out RBI single to score Glass and put SMCC ahead 4-2.
 
In the seventh, Jemio led off the frame with a double and freshman Gabby Rodriguez came in to run for her. With two outs, Harrison drove her home with an RBi single, and Alcala blasted a two-run home run to put the Cougars on top 7-2.
 
The Gauchos scored twice in the bottom of the seventh and put the tying run on first, but Ortega got the final outs to secure her first win of the season. She (1-4) allowed 11 hits and four runs to go with one strikeout over the seven innings.  
 
Blake was 2 for 3 with a run, an RBI, and a stolen base, while Harrison scored twice and had a stolen base. Madrid walked twice and had a sac bunt.
 
Game Two Recap
 
The Cougars scored seven runs over the first two innings and pushed across four in the top of the fifth to earn the 12-1, five-inning victory.
 
Jarvis started the game with a bunt single and quickly stole second. She later scored on an RBI groundout from Jemio. With two down, Glass doubled and moved to third on a single from Blake. A GCC error allowed Glass to score, and Blake later scored on a wild pitch.
 
Alcala started the second with a double, and a single from Madrid put runners on second and third after Madrid advanced on the throw. Wishart drove them both in with a two-run single to right and moved to second on the throw.
 
Jarvis and Su'a drew walks to load the bases, and Jemio recorded a two-run fielder's choice when Wishart came home, and Jarvis scored all the way from second.
 
Jarvis singled, stole second, and Su'a drew a walk to start the fourth. After Jarvis stole third, she scored on an RBI single from Jemio to make it 8-0.
 
The Gauchos got a run in the bottom of the fourth, but SMCC pushed across four in the top of the fifth. Alcala singled and moved to second on a pinch-hit single from freshman Samantha Macnab.
 
A pitch hit Wishart to load the bases, and Sophia Venegas delivered a two-run single where a GCC error allowed Wishart to score and put Venegas on third. Freshman Aliyah Madrid concluded the scoring with an RBI fielder's choice to score Jarvis.
 
Jarvis finished 2 for 2 with a career-high four runs and four stolen bases. Alcala was 2 for 3 with two runs and a double, and Wishart was 1 for 2 with two runs and two RBIs. Jemio drove in four, Madrid scored twice, and Su'a walked twice and stole a base.
 
Jemio (4-1) earned her fourth win of the year with five innings of work in the circle. She worked around four hits and one run, and produced five strikeouts.
