The No. 12 South Mountain Community College softball team (36-10, 28-6 ACCAC Division II) swept an ACCAC Division II home doubleheader with Mesa CC on Saturday, April 11, winning 9-0 (5 innings) and 12-4 (6 innings) to extend its winning streak to 17-straight games. Sophomore Tazia Blake had three RBIs, including a two-run triple, and sophomore Alyssa Jemio tossed a four-hit shutout in the game-one victory. In game two, sophomore Sadie Su'a hit a three-run home run, her 10th of the year, added a double, and picked up a save in the circle as the Cougars took two from the Thunderbirds.
Game One Recap
The Cougars scored nine runs over the first two innings en route to the 9-0, five-inning victory. Freshman Gabby Rodriguez, sophomore Jerzey Jarvis, and Su'a recorded doubles, and Jarvis and freshman Leah Alcala posted stolen bases.
Su'a roped an RBI double that scored Jarvis to open the scoring in the first. Blake connected on a two-out, two-run triple that brought in Su'a and Alcala, and she scored on an RBI single from sophomore Eva Harrison.
Jarvis led off the second with a double and scored on an RBI single by Jemio. Blake, Harrison, and freshman GG Moreno added RBIs in the inning.
Harrison and Rodriguez each had two hits to pace the Cougars. Alcala scored twice and drew two walks, and Jarvis, Blake, and Su'a also scored twice in the win.
Jemio (15-4) earned the win with a complete-game performance. She allowed four hits, walked none, and struck out three.
Game Two Recap
The Thunderbirds led 2-0 and 4-2 before the Cougars responded with five runs in the fourth and five more in the sixth to post the 12-4, six-inning victory.
Moreno had an RBI groundout in the first, and Jarvis scored on an error in the second to momentarily tie the game.
After MCC posted two runs in the fourth, the Cougars rallied for five runs in the bottom of the frame. Moreno doubled to start the inning, a pitch hit Jarvis, and Su'a cleared the bases with a three-run homer to right-center. Freshman Samantha Macnab later added a two-run, two-out single that scored Jemio and sophomore Kaeliann Glass.
In the sixth, Alcala recorded an RBI double that brought in Jemio and put SMCC ahead 8-4. Harrison later added an RBI on a fielder's choice, sophomore Brooklyn Wishart added an RBI single, and sophomore Azlynn Madrid ended the game with a two-run double that scored Harrison and Wishart.
Jarvis, Su'a, Jemio, Alcala, and Madrid had two hits apiece in the win. Jarvis, Jemio, Glass, Alcala, and Wishart each scored twice.
Sophomore Aryka Ortega (9-4) earned the win with four innings of work in the circle. She allowed five hits, two earned runs, and one walk to go with one strikeout. Su'a earned the save with two innings of relief work with three K's.
