SMCC Softball Splits Doubleheader with No. 11 Phoenix College

PHOENIX ---

The South Mountain Community College softball team (2-3, 2-2 ACCAC Division II) split an ACCAC Division II home doubleheader with Phoenix College on Tuesday, Feb. 3, at the SMCC Softball Field. The Cougars fell 12-9 in game one before mounting a three-run, seventh-inning rally to post an 8-7 victory in the second game. Sophomores Azlynn Madrid and Kaeliann Glass and freshman GG Moreno homered in the game-two victory while sophomore Alyssa Jemio tossed a complete game in the circle.

Game One Recap

Trailing 3-1 in the fourth, the Bears scored eight runs in the frame and added insurance runs late to hold off SMCC and post a 12-9 victory.

Offensively, sophomore Sadie Su'a finished 3 for 3 with three RBIs, two runs, and two doubles. After PC scored a run in the first, sophomores Isabella Wolfe and Jerzey Jarvis drew walks and scored on a two-out, two-run double from Su'a. She later scored on an RBI double from Jemio to put SMCC ahead 3-1.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Cougars scored three runs. Sophomore Brooklynn Wishart drew a bases-loaded walk to pull SMCC to within 9-4, Su'a produced a sac fly that scored sophomore Eva Harrison, and Glass delivered a two-out, two-run single that scored Jarvis and Wishart.

Jemio launched a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth to make it a one-run game, but the Bears scored two runs in the sixth and one in the seventh.

Su'a scored on an error in the seventh, and SMCC brought the tying run to the plate, but PC got the final three outs to seal the victory.

Jemio went 3 for 3 with two RBIs, a run, and a walk, while Glass had two RBIs and a walk. Wolfe and Jarvis each scored twice.

Su'a took the loss in the circle, allowing eight hits and nine runs. She walked three and fanned two. Sophomore Aryka Ortega tossed the final three innings for SMCC, allowing six hits and three runs to go with a strikeout.
Game Two Recap

A back-and-forth affair saw the Cougars walk off the Bears with a three-run rally in the bottom of the seventh. That came on the heels of PC scoring four times in the top of the seventh to overcome a two-run deficit.

Moreno started the rally in the seventh with a single, her second hit of the game, and freshmen Leah Alcala and Samantha Macnab drew walks to load the bases with no outs. Madrid hit a sac fly to center that scored Gabby Rodriguez, who was running for Moreno, and an error on the play allowed Alcala to score and send Macnab to third.

Sophomore Tazia Blake came in to run for Macnab and scored easily on a Wolfe sac fly to right to give SMCC the 8-7 victory.

SMCC led 4-1 after four innings behind a solo home run from Madrid in the third and a three-run shot from Moreno in the fourth. However, the Bears got two runs in the fifth to close to within 4-3 before Glass hit a solo shot in the sixth to set up the seventh's dramatics.

Moreno finished 2 for 3 with three RBIs, while Madrid was 1 for 2 with two RBIs. Their home runs were the first of their Cougar careers.

Jemio (2-0) picked up the win with a complete-game effort in the circle. She allowed 12 hits, seven runs, and one walk to go with three K's.
