No. 8 SMCC Softball Forces Decisive Game, Finishes Runner-Up at Region I DII Tournament

The No. 8 South Mountain Community College softball team (47-13) posted a 9-1, six-inning victory to force a decisive, winner-take-all contest, but fell 1-0 to No. 9 Pima CC in the Championship Series of the Region I Division II Tournament. SMCC will now wait to see if it earns one of four at-large bids for the 2026 NJCAA Division II World Series from May 19-24 in Spartanburg, S.C. May 9 Recap
 
The Cougars entered the game needing to win a noon contest against the Aztecs to force a decisive Region Championship game immediately afterward. Sophomore Sadie Su'a led the charge both at the plate and in the circle.
 
Offensively, she went 3 for 3 with a home run, a double, three runs, two RBIs, a stolen base, and a walk. Su'a also posted a complete game in the circle, scattering four hits and an unearned run over six innings. She walked two and fanned five to improve to 17-2 on the season.
 
SMCC took a 1-0 lead in the first when Su'a doubled and later scored on an Aztec error. In the fifth, sophomore Jerzey Jarvis cleared the bases with a three-run triple, and Su'a followed that up with a two-run home run to put SMCC ahead 6-0. Sophomore Kaeliann Glass later added a solo home run with two outs in the frame.
 
Glass added a two-out RBI single in the sixth, and Su'a scored later in the inning on an error.
 
Glass went 2 for 3 with two RBIs, a run, a walk, and her seventh home run of the season. Sophomore Eva Harrison was 2 for 2 with two runs, a walk, and a stolen base.
 
The subsequent Championship Game was a scoreless affair until Pima CC pushed across the winning run with a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the sixth.
 
Jarvis, Su'a, and freshmen Leah Alcala and Gabby Rodriguez collected singles in the loss. Freshman GG Moreno drew a walk.
 
Su'a took the loss in the circle, falling to 17-3 on the season. She went six innings with five hits, one earned run, five walks, and two strikeouts.
 
May 8 Recap
 
The Cougars and Aztecs played a winner's bracket game that went extra innings before Pima CC won it 5-4 with a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth. SMCC followed that up with a 6-2 victory over No. 16 Phoenix College to advance to the Championship Series.
 
SMCC and Pima CC opened the day with the first of three meetings over the weekend. SMCC went ahead 2-0 in the fourth on a two-run home run from Moreno, her 13th of the year.
 
Pima CC responded with three runs in its half of the inning and added a fourth run in the bottom of the fifth. The Cougars tied the game in the sixth when Jarvis delivered a two-out, two-run double that scored Harrison and sophomore Brooklynn Wishart.
 
SMCC could not cash in its chances in the eighth and ninth before the Aztecs posted the walk-off win.
 
Moreno was 3 for 4 with a run and two RBIs. Jarvis was 2 for 4 with two RBIs, and sophomore Alyssa Jemio added a pair of singles. Harrison was the fourth Cougar with two hits, adding one walk, one run, and a sac bunt.
 
Sophomore Aryka Ortega (14-5) took the loss after 4.2 innings of relief work. She allowed seven hits, one earned run, and one walk to go with two strikeouts. Jemio started the game and went three innings without allowing a base runner. Su'a went one inning with four hits, three earned runs, and one walk.
 
The Cougars rebounded with a 6-2 triumph over the Bears behind five doubles. SMCC posted a run in the first when Su'a and Jemio recorded back-to-back doubles.
 
In the third, sophomore Tazia Blake cleared the bases with a three-run double to put SMCC ahead 4-0.
 
After Phoenix College scored runs in the fourth and fifth, the Cougars restored their four-run advantage with two in the sixth. Glasa and Alcala posted consecutive doubles that scored Jarvis and Glass, respectively.
 
Jemio (16-5) earned the win with five innings of work. She allowed 10 hits and two earned runs while fanning one. Su'a recorded her seventh save of the year with two innings of hitless relief with one strikeout.
 
May 7 Recap
 
The Cougars opened the tournament with a 3-1 victory over Phoenix College. Su'a earned the win in the circle with five innings of work. She allowed five hits, one earned run, and two walks to go with four K's. Ortega picked up her second save of the year with two innings of relief. She allowed one hit and two walks.
 
SMCC went ahead 1-0 in the first on an RBI single from Jemio that scored Jarvis. The Cougars doubled their lead in the third when Su'a scored as a result of an error.
 
After PC got a run in the fourth, SMCC got it back with a run in the fifth after Jemio scored on an error. She was 2 for 2 with a double, a run, an RBI, and a walk to lead the offense.
 
Su'a stole a pair of bases, walked, and scored a run, and Jarvis stole a base and scored a run.
