PHOENIX ---

The No. 10 South Mountain Community College softball team (38-11, 29-7 ACCAC Division II) split an ACCAC Division II doubleheader with No. 7 Pima CC on Saturday, April 18 at the SMCC Softball Field, falling 6-4 in game one before posting a 2-1 victory in game two. Sophomore Jerzey Jarvis had two hits and three RBIs in game one, but some Cougar errors aided the Aztecs in snapping SMCC's 18-game winning streak. In game two, sophomore Aryka Ortega turned in four shutout innings in relief, and freshman GG Moreno delivered a game-winning sac fly to help the Cougars snap the Aztecs' 15-game winning streak and halve the season series between the two squads.

Game One Recap

Tied 1-1 at the top of the fourth, the Aztecs scored three runs to pull ahead 4-1. SMCC responded with two in the fifth to draw within 4-3, but Pima CC scored two runs in the seventh and held off a Cougar rally in the bottom half to secure the victory.

Jarvis tied the game with an RBI triple in the third, her fifth three-base hit of the season, that scored freshman Gabby Rodriguez. In the fifth, she recorded a two-run single that scored sophomores Eva Harrison and Azlynn Madrid.

In the seventh, sophomore Sadie Su'a recorded an RBI single that scored Rodriguez and brought the go-ahead run to the plate. However, the Aztecs got a fielder's choice to end the game.

Moreno recorded two hits, including a double, and Rodriguez scored twice. Freshman Leah Alcala added a double.

Sophomore Alyssa Jemio (15-5) took the loss in the circle with 1.1 innings of work. She allowed three hits, three walks, and two earned runs. Su'a threw 5.2 innings and allowed seven hits, one earned run, and one walk to go with nine strikeouts.

Game Two Recap

Moreno broke a 1-1 tie with a sac fly in the fourth, and Ortega was outstanding in relief to help the Cougars split the twin bill and finish 3-3 in the season series with the Aztecs.

SMCC jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first on a two-out RBI single from sophomore Kaeliann Glass that scored Su'a.

After Pima CC tied the game with a run in the second, Moreno brought in Alcala with a sac fly to right to break the deadlock.

That was enough for Ortega, who scattered three hits and one walk over four frames to improve to 11-4 on the season. She also fanned two batters. Su'a started the game and went three innings with two hits and one earned run.
