SMCC Softball Splits Twin Bill with Yavapai College

The South Mountain Community College softball team (4-5) split a non-conference doubleheader with Yavapai College on Tuesday, Feb. 10, at the SMCC Softball Field. The Cougars rolled to a 10-2, five-inning victory behind a grand slam from sophomore Sadie Su'a and a complete-game effort in the circle from sophomore Alyssa Jemio. In game two, freshman Leah Alcala had a double and a stolen base, but the Cougars fell 5-1.
 
Game One Recap
 
The Cougars scored three runs in the first, one in the second, and six in the third en route to a 10-2, five-inning victory over the Roughriders.
 
After Yavapai scored a run in the first, Su'a reached on an error in the bottom of the first with one out. Jemio laced a single to put runners on the corners, and sophomore Kaeliann Glass brought in Su'a to tie the game with an RBI single. Sophomore Tazia Blake then brought in Jemio with an RBI single, and sophomore Jerzey Jarvis made it 3-0 with an RBI double to score Glass.
 
In the second, Su'a singled with two outs, stole second base, and scored on a two-out RBI single from Jemio.
 
In the fourth, Jarvis singled with one out, sophomore Eva Harrison drew a walk, and freshman GG Moreno reached on an error to load the bases. Sophomore Azlynn Madrid recorded an RBI fielder's choice, sophomore Brooklynn Wishart drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 6-2, and Su'a cleared the bases with a grand slam to left.
 
Su'a finished 2 for 3 with three runs, four RBIs, a home run, and a stolen base. Jarvis and Jemio both went 2 for 3 with a run and an RBI, with Jarvis adding a stolen base and a double.
 
Jemio (3-0) picked up her third win of the year with five innings of work. She scattered five hits and one walk to go with one strikeout.
 
Game Two Recap
 
The Cougars' offense could not solve Yavapai's Daisy Smith and fell 5-1 in the second game.
 
SMCC totaled two hits and no runs off Smith over seven innings of work, getting its only run against another pitcher who started the seventh inning before Smith re-entered the game.
 
Harrison broke up Smith's no-hitter in the fourth with a two-out single, and Alcala doubled to start the fifth. In the seventh, Alcala drew a bases-loaded walk to bring in Wishart.
 
Yavapai scored four unearned runs off sophomore Aryka Ortega in the third and added an insurance run in the sixth. Ortega (0-3) allowed seven hits, one earned run, and two walks to go with three strikeouts.
