No. 12 SMCC Softball Takes Two from No. 15 Phoenix College

The No. 12 South Mountain Community College softball team (34-10, 26-6 ACCAC Division II) defeated No. 15 Phoenix College 7-5 and 8-2 in an ACCAC Division II home doubleheader on Tuesday, April 7. Sophomore Alyssa Jemio earned the win in the circle and drove in three runs at the plate, including a solo home run, in the game-one victory. In game two, freshman Leah Alcala blasted a go-ahead two-run home run in the fifth and fellow rookie GG Moreno launched her second home run of the day in the 8-2 win as the Cougars claimed the season series with the Bears and extended their winning streak to 15-straight games.
Game One Recap
The Cougars scored seven runs over the middle three innings to defeat the Bears 7-5. Jemio tied the game at 1-1 with a solo home run, her fourth of the season.
In the fourth, SMCC took a 3-1 lead when Jemio roped a two-out, two-run single that scored sophomores Brooklynn Wishart and Jerzey Jarvis.
Moreno launched a three-run home run in the fifth to put SMCC ahead 6-2, and sophomore Sadie Su'a roped an RBI double that scored Jarvis later in the inning.
Phoenix College fought back with three runs in the sixth, but Su'a earned her fourth save of the season with 1.1 innings of one-hit relief work. Jemio (14-4) earned the win with 5.2 innings and seven hits, one earned run, one walk, and two strikeouts. Offensively, she was 2 for 3 with a run and three RBIs.
Moreno was 1 for 1 with two walks in addition to the three-run home run. Alcala added a double in the win, and Jarvis and Wishart each had stolen bases.
Game Two Recap
After PC scored a pair of runs in the top of the second, SMCC rallied for the 8-2 victory behind home runs from Alcala and Moreno.
The game hinged in the fifth inning. PC put runners on second and third with no outs, but Su'a fanned the next two batters and got a pop out to end the inning and leave the runners stranded.
She then led off the bottom of the fifth with a single, but was still there with two outs. Alcala brought her home with a two-run home run to right, her sixth deep fly of the year. Sophomore Tazia Blake later scored on a passed ball in the inning to put SMCC ahead 5-2.
In the sixth, sophomore Kaeliann Glass and Alcala picked up RBI singles, and Glass scored on an error off the bat of Blake.
Jarvis scored on an error in the third to put SMCC on the scoreboard, and Moreno launched a solo home run in the fourth to tie the game.
Alcala was 2 for 4 with one run and three RBIs, and Moreno was 1 for 2 with two walks. Su'a had two singles and scored twice, and Jarvis added a pair of hits.
Su'a (12-2) earned the win with 6.2 innings of work. She did not allow a run and worked around six hits and four walks while fanning six. Sophomore Aryka Ortega also saw time in the circle for SMCC.
