No. 10 SMCC Softball Sweeps Scottsdale CC

The No. 10 South Mountain Community College softball team (42-11, 33-7 ACCAC Division II) swept an ACCAC road doubleheader at Scottsdale CC on Saturday, April 25, winning 9-1 (5 innings) in game one and 14-2 (6 innings) in game two. Sophomore Sadie Su'a blasted a home run at the plate and posted four innings in the circle to get the win, while freshman Leah Alcala had three RBIs in the game-one victory. In game two, Alcala and sophomores Alyssa Jemio and Tazia Blake all launched home runs as the Cougars took two from the Fighting Artichokes.
 
Game One Recap
 
Tied 1-1 in the fourth, SMCC posted five runs in the frame and added three in the fifth to record the 9-1, five-inning victory.
 
Freshman Gabby Rodriguez led off the fourth with a double and moved to third on a sac bunt by sophomore Jerzey Jarvis. Su'a drew a walk to put runners on the corner, and a pitch hit Jemio to load the bases.
 
Another pitch hit sophomore Kaeliann Glass to force in a run, and Alcala made it 4-1 with a two-run single. Sophomore Eva Harrison and freshman GG Moreno later added RBIs in the frame.
 
Su'a blasted a solo home run with one out in the fifth, and Alcala and Blake recorded RBI singles to enact the run rule.
 
Alcala was 2 for 4 with two runs and three RBIs, while Jemio went 2 for 3 with a run. Su'a finished 1 for 2 with two runs, two walks, and an RBI. Blake was 1 for 1 with two RBIs and two runs.
 
Su'a (14-2) earned the win with four innings in the circle. She allowed six hits, one earned run, and two walks to go with six strikeouts. Sophomore Aryka Ortega tossed a clean fifth to secure the win.  
 
Game Two Recap
 
SMCC scored multiple runs in four frames to fuel a 14-2, six-inning victory to sweep the twin bill.
 
Jemio hit a two-run homer, her sixth of the year, in the first, and Blake led off the second with her third deep fly of the season.
 
Later in the second, Jarvis delivered an RBI single that scored sophomore Azlynn Madrid, and Jemio and Glass recorded RBI singles to put SMCC ahead 6-0.
 
After SCC got two in the bottom of the second, the Cougars got them back with two of their own in the fourth. Jarvis stole home, one of her three steals in the game, and Glass recorded a sac fly that plated Su'a.
 
Jemio picked up an RBI on a walk in the fifth, and Alcala led off the sixth with her seventh home run of the season. Su'a later cleared the bases with a three-run double, and she scored on an error to put SMCC ahead 14-2.
 
Su'a was 3 for 4 with three runs, three RBIs, a walk, a stolen base, and her 28th double of the season. Jarvis also had three hits to go with her three steals and added an RBI.
 
Jemio was 2 for 3 with three RBIs, two walks, a stolen base, and a run. Rodriguez scored three times, walked twice, and had a stolen base.
 
Ortega (13-4) earned the win in the circle with three innings of relief work. She did not allow a base runner over the three frames. Su'a started the game and went two innings with one hit, one walk, and one strikeout. Jemio tossed the sixth and had one punchout.
