The No. 14 South Mountain Community College softball team went 5-1 over its Spring Break. The Cougars opened the holiday week with a non-conference sweep of Lake Region State College (ND) on Mar. 14, winning 9-0 (5 innings) and 13-3 (5 innings). Three days later, SMCC split an ACCAC Division II doubleheader at No. 12 Pima CC. The Cougars won 11-3 in game two after falling 7-4 in game one against the Aztecs. Finally, the Cougars swept an ACCAC Division II home doubleheader against Glendale CC on Mar. 21, winning 6-1 and 11-7.

The Cougars finished with 11 hits, including four for extra bases, in the game-one victory. SMCC scored twice in the first, twice in the second, once in the third, and four times in the fourth.
Sophomore Kaeliann Glass was a perfect 3 for 3 at the plate to lead the charge offensively, posting two runs and two RBIs.
Freshman Leah Alcala had a pair of doubles and finished 2 for 3 with two RBIs and a run. Sophomore Sadie Su'a had the team's third double and went 2 for 3 with two runs and a stolen base. Sophomore Azlynn Madrid slashed a triple to right and was 1 for 2 with a run and an RBI.
Sophomore Jerzey Jarvis was 2 for 3 with a run, an RBI, and a stolen base, and sophomores Tazia Blake and Brooklynn Wishart had sac flies.
Sophomore Alyssa Jemio (8-3) earned the win in the circle with four innings of shutout work. She allowed two hits and fanned four. Sophomore Aryka Ortega tossed an inning of relief.
In game two, the Cougars had to overcome an early 3-1 deficit as the Royals scored twice in the second and once in the third. Freshman Gabby Rodriguez put SMCC ahead for good with a three-run double off the wall in center in the bottom of the third.
SMCC went on to score nine runs in the bottom of the fourth to post the 13-3, five-inning triumph.
Glass continued her strong day at the plate, blasting a home run and finishing with three RBIs, two runs, and two walks. Su'a had a pair of doubles with a run and four RBIs, while freshman Samantha Macnab had two hits. Freshman GG Moreno and Madrid added RBIs in the win, and sophomore Eva Harrison, Alcala, Rodriguez, Madrid, and Jarvis added stolen bases.
Ortega (5-4) earned the win in the circle with three innings of work. She allowed five hits, one earned run, and two walks with one strikeout. Su'a tossed the final two innings and had four strikeouts, two hits, and two walks.

The two nationally ranked squads battled to their second doubleheader split of the season on St. Patrick's Day. The home Aztecs won game one 7-4 before SMCC posted an 11-3 victory in game two.
The Aztecs led 4-0 after two innings and 6-2 after four before SMCC Alcala smashed a two-out, two-run home run that drew SMCC within 6-4 in the top of the fifth. However, the Aztecs added an insurance run in the fifth and held off a Cougar rally to post the win.
Alcala went 2 for 3 with three RBIs and a double. Blake posted her first home run of the season, a solo shot to left in the fourth, and Su'a and Jemio scored runs in defeat.
Jemio (8-4) took the loss in the circle with three innings of work. She allowed five hits and four earned runs. Su'a tossed the final three innings and allowed three hits, two earned runs, and two walks with one strikeout.
SMCC responded with an 11-3 victory in game two, featuring a stellar offensive performance from Jemio. The sophomore went 4 for 5 with two runs, two doubles, and seven RBIs to match career bests in hits and RBIs.
SMCC scored seven runs over the first two innings, including a two-run double in the first and a two-run single in the second from Jemio.
After the Aztecs closed to within 8-3 in the fourth, the Cougars scored three insurance runs in the seventh to halve the twin bill.
Jarvis and Su'a each went 2 for 5 with three runs, and Rodriguez was 1 for 1 with two runs and three walks. Blake had a stolen base and scored a run, and Harrison posted an RBI single and a walk.
Ortega (6-4) earned the win with 3.2 innings of shutout relief work. She worked around three hits and did not walk a batter. Su'a started the game and went 3.1 innings with two hits, two earned runs, two walks, and strikeouts.

The Cougars swept the Gauchos, 6-1 and 11-7, at home on Mar. 21 to claim the season series.
In game one, Jemio (9-4) tossed five innings of shutout softball to earn the win. She allowed two hits, fanned five, and walked one. Su'a threw the final two frames and allowed one hit and one earned run to go with three K's.
SMCC scored a run in the second and third to build a 2-0 lead. Jarvis roped a two-out RBI double to score Moreno in the second, and Madrid drew a bases-loaded walk in the third.
In the fourth, a pitch hit Jarvis to start the frame, and she quickly stole second. Jemio drove her home with an RBI single to center, and she later scored on a wild pitch with tw outs. Madrid then roped a two-run double to score Alcala and Blake and put SMCC ahead 6-0.
Jemio was a perfect 3 for 3 at the plate with two runs, two stolen bases, and an RBI. Madrid finished with a season-high three RBIs.
SMCC overcame a 7-5 deficit after the top of the fourth to prevail 11-7 and sweep the twin bill. The Cougars scored three runs in the fifth and sixth to seal the comeback.
Harrison drew a bases-loaded walk to bring SMCC within 7-6, and Rodriguez drew another RBI walk to tie the game in the fourth. The Cougars took the lead when Alcala scored on a passed ball before the inning ended.
In the sixth, Harrison delivered a two-run single that scored Su'a and Jemio. Blake tacked on a sac fly to bring the scoring to an end.
Glass and Alcala hit home runs in the victory, the fifth of each of the seasons. Glass was 2 for 4 with two runs and two RBIs, while Alcala went 1 for 2 with three runs, an RBI, and a walk.
Harison went 2 for 3 with three RBIs, two stolen bases, a run, and a walk. Jemio was 2 for 3 with two runs, an RBI and a walk, and Su'a finished 2 for 4 with two runs.
Su'a (7-2) started the game and went 4.2 innings to earn the win. She allowed four hits, two earned runs, and three walks to go with seven strikeouts. Jemio picked up her second save of the year with two innings of hitless relief. Ortega also saw time in the circle.
