SMCC Softball Splits Twin Bill with Chandler-Gilbert CC

PHOENIX ---

The South Mountain Community College softball team (1-2, 1-1 ACCAC Division II) split an ACCAC Division II home doubleheader with Chandler-Gilbert CC on Saturday, Jan. 31, winning 5-3 in game one before falling 10-6 in game two. Sophomore Alyssa Jemio tossed a complete game with three strikeouts to help lift SMCC to the victory in game one. Offensively, sophomore Sadie Su'a had two hits and two RBIs in each contest, and sophomore Kaeliann Glass had five RBIs over the two games.

Game One Recap

The Cougars jumped out early and held on late for a 5-3 victory in their home and conference opener. Su'a and sophomore Brooklynn Wishart had two hits apiece to pace the offense, with Su'a and sophomore Eva Harrison scoring twice.

The offense got clicking immediately with two runs in the bottom of the first. Wishart led off the frame with a single, stole second, and moved to third on a wild pitch. After Su'a drew a walk and moved to second on a wild pitch, Glass roped a single to center to score them both.

In the third, Su'a singled to start the inning and wound up on third after a pair of wild pitches. Glass brought her in with a groundout to put SMCC ahead 3-0. The Cougars made it 4-0 in the fourth on a Su'a RBI single that scored Harrison.

After CGCC cut the lead to 4-2 in the fifth, the Cougars added an insurance run in the sixth when Su'a drove in Harrison with a groundout. The Coyotes made things interesting in the seventh, loading the bases with two outs before Jemio induced a groundout to end the game.

Jemio (1-0) went seven innings with seven hits, three strikeouts, and three walks to earn her first win of the season.

Game Two Recap

The Cougars and Coyotes exchanged runs and were tied at 4-4 to start the fifth inning. That's when CGCC exploded for four runs and, after SMCC got a run in the sixth, added two insurance runs in the seventh. Those proved important as CGCC held off a late Cougar rally to post the 10-7 victory.

Su'a finished 2 for 3 with a double, three runs, two RBIs, and two walks. She hit a two-run home run, her first of the season, in the bottom of the first that brought in Wishart.

Glass was 2 for 3 with a double, two RBIs, and two walks. She had an RBI double in the second to plate Su'a, and earned a bases-loaded walk in the seventh.

Jemio had a double and two RBIs in defeat. She had an RBI fielder's choice in the sixth that brought in Su'a, and doubled home Harrison in the fourth.

Wishart scored twice and had a hit, and GG Moreno and Isabella Wolfe also had base hits. Jerzey Jarvis had a stolen base.

Sophomore Aryka Ortega (0-2) took the loss for SMCC. She allowed 13 hits, seven earned runs, and four walks to go with four K's over seven innings.
