No. 13 SMCC Softball Sweeps Twin Bill at Central Arizona

The No. 13 South Mountain Community College softball team (30-10) defeated Central Arizona 6-5 and 2-1 in a non-conference road doubleheader on Tuesday, Mar. 31, in Coolidge, Ariz. Sophomore Sadie Su'a had a double, a home run, and two RBIs, and freshman Leah Alcala added two hits in the game-one victory. In game two, sophomore Tazia Blake broke a 1-1 deadlock with a sac fly in the top of the seventh to help lift the Cougars to the doubleheader sweep.
 
Game One Recap
 
Tied 4-4 heading into the fifth, SMCC got a run in the frame and added an important insurance run in the seventh to hold off the Vaqueras for the 6-5 victory.
 
Su'a reached on a three-base error to start the fifth and scored on an error off the bat of Alcala. Su'a then led off the seventh with a solo home run, her ninth of the season, that proved to be the winning run.
 
Central Arizona loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh, but sophomore Aryka Ortega got a pop out to get the final out of the game and earn the save. She had two strikeouts in two innings. Sophomore Alyssa Jemio (12-4) earned the win with five innings of work. She allowed seven hits and three earned runs with three K's.
 
Sophomore Eva Harrison had an RBI base hit in the second, and Su'a, sophomore Kaeliann Glass, and Alcala had RBI doubles in the third. Alcala added a pair of stolen bases in the win.
 
Game Two Recap
 
Blake drove in Alcala in with a sac fly to center in the seventh to give SMCC a 2-1 victory. Glass had an RBI single that scored Jemio in the fourth to put the Cougars ahead 1-0.
 
Central Arizona tied the game in the bottom of the fifth, but Su'a (10-2) retired the Vaqueras in order in the seventh to earn the win. She allowed four hits and one earned run to go with six strikeouts.
 
Alcala, sophomore Jerzey Jarvis, and freshman Samantha Macnab had stolen bases in the win.
