SMCC Softball Falls to Southern Nevada in Season Opener

The South Mountain Community College softball team lost 13-8 to Southern Nevada in a non-conference contest at Chandler-Gilbert CC on Saturday, Jan. 24. GG Moreno had four RBIs in her Cougar debut, sophomore Kaeliann Glass had an RBI double, and Sadie Su'a had two hits, including a triple, and two RBIs in SMCC's season opener.
After the Coyotes got a run in the top of the first off SMCC starter Aryka Ortega, the Cougars struck for four runs in the bottom half. Glass drove in Brooklyn Wishart with an RBI double, and Moreno delivered a three-run double that scored Glass, Alyssa Jemio, and Tazia Blake.
However, CSN struck for five runs in the second to take a 7-4 lead. In the bottom of the third, Moreno picked up her fourth RBI of the day with a groundout that scored Su'a and cut the deficit to 7-5.
The Coyotes got a solo home run in the top of the fourth to go back up three runs, but SMCC had an answer again. Jerzey Jarvis and Wishart singled with one out, and both came in on a two-run triple from Su'a.
The score remained 8-7 until the top of the seventh, when CSN scored five runs to seal the victory. Eva Harrison produced an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh to conclude the game's scoring.
Five Cougars had two hits in the loss: Glass, Su'a, Blake, Moreno, and Jarvis. Wishart and Jarvis posted stolen bases, and Jemio, Su'a, and Moreno teamed up for a double play on defense.
Ortega (0-1) took the loss in the circle with two innings of work. She finished with three strikeouts, one walk, and seven runs. Jemio tossed three innings of relief and allowed five hits, one walk, and one run, and Su'a tossed the final two frames. She recorded two strikeouts and two walks.
