SMCC Softball Falls to Eastern Arizona in Non-Conference Doubleheader
PHOENIX ---
The South Mountain Community College softball team (7-8) lost 15-10 and 9-5 to Eastern Arizona in a non-conference doubleheader in Thatcher, Ariz., on Wednesday, Feb. 19. Freshman Leah Alcala finished with five hits, two triples, two runs, four RBIs, two walks and a stolen base over the two games to lead the Cougar offense. Sophomore Sadie Su'a went 4 for 4 in game two with two runs and a stolen base, and sophomore Jerzey Jarvis scored five runs over the two contests.
Game One Recap
The Cougars built an 8-3 lead after the top of the third, but the Gila Monsters scored 10 runs across the third and fourth and added two insurance runs in the sixth after SMCC cut the deficit to three.
Jarvis and Su'a started the game with walks, and Jarvis scored on an RBI single from sophomore Alyssa Jemio. With one out, Alcala roped a two-run triple that scored Su'a and Jemio, and she later scored on an RBI groundout from sophomore Eva Harrison.
EAC cut the lead in half with two runs in their half of the first, but SMCC scored three in the top of the second. Jarvis reached on an error and scored on an error off the bat of Jemio. Harrison later produced a two-out, two-run single that scored Jemio and sophomore Kaeliann Glass and put SMCC ahead 7-2.
After the Gila Monsters got one in their half of the second, SMCC got it right back in the top of the third when Jarvis hit a two-out triple and scored on an error on the play.
However, Cougar errors in the third inning undid all that work, and SMCC trailed 9-8 at its end. EAC added four more runs in the fourth to make it 13-8.
Harrison and Alcala scored to bring SMCC within 13-10 in the sixth, but the Gila Monsters pushed across two of their own in the bottom of the frame and got the side in order in the seventh to seal the win.
Alcala was 3 for 3 with two runs, two RBIs, a walk, a triple, and a stolen base, while Jemio went 3 for 5 with two runs, a double, and an RBI. Freshman GG Moreno was 2 for 4 with a double, and Jarvis scored three times with a triple and a walk.
Jemio (4-2) took the loss in the circle. She allowed 10 hits, 13 runs, and one walk plus one strikeout in 3.1 innings of work. Sophomore Aryka Ortega tossed 2.2 innings of relief work with six hits and two runs.
Game Two Recap
Eastern Arizona kept its offensive momentum rolling in game two, scoring seven times over the first three innings to lead 7-4. The Gila Monsters added two in the sixth before SMCC pushed one final run across in the seventh.
SMCC led 2-0 after half an inning when Alcala and Moreno delivered two-out RBI singles to score Jarvis and Su'a, respectively. The Cougars cut the lead to 5-4 in the third on an RBI groundout from Glass and an RBI triple from Alcala.
However, EAC scored twice in the bottom of the third to re-establish a three-run lead. Trailing by five in the seventh, Jemio plated Jarvis with an RBI single to conclude the game's scoring.
Su'a was 4 for 4 with four singles, two runs, and a stolen base. Alcala went 2 for 3 with a triple and two RBis, and Moreno was 2 for 3 with an RBI.
