No. 23 SMCC Softball Sweeps ACCAC DII Series at No. 9 Phoenix College

South Mountain Community College, ranked No. 23, swept No. 9 Phoenix College on the road in an ACCAC Division II softball doubleheader on Saturday, Mar. 7. SMCC took game one 6-3, then won game two 14-3 in six innings. Sophomore Alyssa Jemio and Tazia Blake had two hits each to lead the Cougars offensively, while sophomore Sadie Su'a delivered five innings of two-hit relief in game one. In game two, freshman GG Moreno went 3 for 4 with a home run and five RBIs, Blake and Su'a each scored three times, and sophomore Aryka Ortega earned the win in the circle.
 
Game One Recap
 
SMCC jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first and held off the Bears to win the first game of the twin bill. SMCC had nine hits in the win, including doubles from Su'a, Blake, Moreno, and freshman Leah Alcala.
 
Jemio started the scoring with an RBI single that plated sophomore Brooklynn Wishart three batters into the game. Blake then added a two-run single that plated Su'a and Jemio to put SMCC ahead early.
 
SMCC made it 4-0 on an RBI double from Alcala that brought in Jemio in the third. Later in the frame, sophomore Jerzey Jarvis delivered a two-out RBI single that scored sophomore Kaeliann Glass and put the Cougars up five.
 
The Bears responded with a pair of runs in their half of the third and made it 5-3 on a solo home run in the sixth. However, the Cougars got the run back in the top of the seventh on a sac fly from Glass that brought in Wishart.
 
Jemio was 2 for 3 with two runs and an RBI, while Blake was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and a double. Wishart, Jemio, and Glass all recorded stolen bases.
 
Su'a (6-2) earned the win with five innings of relief. She allowed two hits, one earned run, and three walks to go with four strikeouts. Jemio started the game and went two innings with two hits and two K's.
 
Game Two Recap
 
The Cougars continued to strike early, scoring four times in the first plus two runs in the third and fourth to pull ahead 8-3. That set up a six-run sixth for SMCC, who went on to win the game 14-3 in six frames.
 
Jemio once again got the scoring started, driving in Jarvis with an RBI single three batters into the game. Glass added an RBI groundout that scored Su'a, and Blake and Moreno produced two-out RBI singles to put SMCC up four.
 
The Cougars made it 5-1 in the third on an RBI single from Blake that scored Alcala, and Moreno drove her in with an RBI groundout to make it 6-1.
 
In the fourth, Su'a brought in sophomore Eva Harrison with an RBI single, and Glass plated Su'a with an RBI double.
 
Jemio had an RBI single that scored Jarvis, Alcala recorded an RBi single that scored Su'a, Blake reached on an error that allowed sophomore Azlynn Madrid to score, and Moreno cleared the bases with a three-run home run in the sixth. The deep fly was her fourth of the season and her five RBIs increased her season total to 23.
 
Su'a was 2 for 2 with three runs scored, an RBI, a walk, a double, and two stolen bases. Blake went 2 for 4 with three runs and two RBIs, while Jemio was 2 for 4 with two RBIs and a run.
 
Alcala had two stolen bases and scored two runs, while Jarvis finished with two sac bunts, two runs, and a stolen base.
 
In the circle, Ortega (3-4) earned the win with three innings of work. She allowed three hits and one earned run to improve to 3-4 on the year. Su'a tossed two innings of relief with two hits and two earned runs, and Jemio tossed the sixth and had a strikeout.
