SMCC Softball Sweeps Conference Doubleheader at Scottsdale CC

The South Mountain Community College softball team (9-8, 8-4 ACCAC Division II) swept an ACCAC Division II doubleheader at Scottsdale CC on Saturday, Feb. 21. The Cougars rallied from a 7-3 deficit to post a 9-8 victory in nine innings in the first game. In the second game, the Cougars powered to an 11-2 victory. Sophomore Sadie Su'a had a sensational day both at the plate and in the circle to help lead the Cougars to the two victories.
 
Game One Recap
 
SMCC trailed 7-3 after three innings, but chipped away at the lead with two runs in the sixth and two runs in the seventh to send the game into extra innings. After neither team could push across a run in the eighth, the Cougars got an RBI groundout from sophomore Jerzey Jarvis that plated sophomore Eva Harrison to put SMCC ahead 8-7.
 
Su'a (3-2) retired the side in order at the bottom of the ninth to seal the victory. She tossed six innings of hitless relief with one walk and 10 strikeouts to earn her third win of the season. Sophomore Aryka Ortega started the game for SMCC and went three innings with seven hits and four earned runs.
 
The Cougars broke the deadlock with three runs in the top of the third. Su'a reached on an error, sophomore Alyssa Jemio singled, and a pitch hit Glass to load the bases with no outs.
 
With one out, freshman GG Moreno picked up an RBI when a pitch hit her, and sophomore Eva Harrison drew a bases-loaded walk. Freshman Samantha Macnab then made it 3-0 with a two-run single that plated Glass.
 
After SCC scored seven times in its half of the third, SMCC posted two runs in the sixth and seventh. Su'a started the sixth with a double, a pitch hit Jemio, and freshman Leah Alcala drew a walk to load the bases with one out. A throwing error to third after Alcala saw ball four allowed Su'a and Jemio to score, although Alcala was thrown out on the play trying to get to third.
 
In the seventh, Jemio roped a two-out, two-run triple that scored Macnab and Su'a to tie the game. She finished 2 for 4 with two RBIs, one run, and a triple.
 
Offensively, Su'a went 3 for 5 with three runs, two doubles, and a walk. Harrison and Jarvis recorded sac bunts in the win.
 
Game Two Recap
 
Su'a went 4 for 5 with four runs, three RBIs, two doubles, and a home run to help power the Cougars past the Fighting Artichokes 11-2 in the second game of the twin bill. In the circle, she tossed three innings of hitless relief work with two walks and two strikeouts to earn her first save of the season.
 
SMCC scored twice in the first. Jarvis led off the game with a triple and scored on an error off the bat of Su'a. Glass then drove in Su'a with an RBI single.
 
After SCC tied the game with a single run in the first and second, SMCC took a 3-2 lead in the third when Harrison hit a sac fly to score Alcala.
 
The Cougars added three runs in the fourth. Sophomore Brooklynn Wishart walked and stole second to start the frame. She scored on an RBI single from Jarvis and, after Su'a's single pushed Jarvis to third, Jemio hit a sac fly to bring home Jarvis. Alcala made it 6-2 with an RBI single that scored Su'a.
 
Su'a started the sixth with a double and scored on an RBI groundout from Glass to make it 7-2.
 
In the seventh, Moreno singled, and Harrison doubled to start the inning. Freshman Gabby Rodriguez ran for Moreno, and she and Harrison scored on a two-run single from Macnab. After Wishart grounded into a fielder's choice, she walked home on Su'a's two-run home run, her fifth of the season.
 
Jarvis, Moreno, and Glass all had two hits apiece in the win.
 
Jemio (5-2) earned the win after going four innings. She allowed five hits, two runs, and three walks, to go with two strikeouts.
