PHOENIX ---

The No. 13 South Mountain Community College softball team (32-10, 24-6 ACCAC Division II) swept an ACCAC Division II home doubleheader against Chandler-Gilbert CC on Saturday, Apr. 4, winning 9-1 (6 innings) and 3-2. Three Cougars (Jerzey Jarvis, Leah Alcala, and Eva Harrison) had two hits apiece, and sophomore Alyssa Jemio tossed five innings of two-hit shutout softball in the game-one victory. In game two, freshman Samantha Macnab hit a two-out RBI double to score Alcala in the bottom of the fifth to break a 2-2 deadlock and lift the Cougars to the doubleheader sweep and season series victory over the Coyotes.

Game One Recap

The Cougars scored multiple runs in three innings, including a four-run sixth, to post a 9-1, six-inning victory over the Coyotes.

SMCC struck first as sophomore Tazia Blake roped a two-run double in the bottom of the second that scored Harrison and sophomore Kaeliann Glass. Jemio then scored in the third on a throwing error to put SMCC ahead 3-0.

In the fifth, Glass and Alcala scored to put the Cougars up five. The seventh saw Jemio, Glass, and Alcala pick up RBIs to end the game.

Jarvis was 2 for 4 with a run, Alcala went 2 for 4 with a run and an RBI, and Harrison was 2 for 3 with a run and a stolen base. Glass drew three walks and scored twice.

Jemio (13-4) earned the win in the circle with an impressive performance. She scattered two hits with no walks and three strikeouts across five innings. Su'a tossed the final two frames, allowing two hits, an earned run, and a walk.

Game Two Recap

The teams engaged in a tight affair that saw Macnab come through with two outs in the bottom of the fifth. After Alcala doubled to start the frame, two outs went by without her moving a base. That brought up Macnab, who split the outfielders in the gap in right-center to bring in the Alcala for the winning run.

Jarvis tied the game with a two-run single in the second inning after CGCC scored twice in the first off SMCC starter Aryka Ortega. Jarvis finished 2 for 4, recording two RBIs and stealing a base during the game. Su'a contributed offensively with a double.

Su'a also recorded the win in the circle, improving to 11-2 on the season. She did not allow a hit in five innings of relief work, walking three and striking out nine. Ortega went the first two innings and allowed three hits, one earned run, and one walk.
