No. 23 SMCC Softball Splits ACCAC Doubleheader at Chandler-Gilbert CC

The No. 23 South Mountain Community College softball team (13-9, 11-5 ACCAC Division II) split an ACCAC Division II doubleheader at Chandler-Gilbert CC on Tuesday, Mar. 3, falling 2-1 in game one before posting a 12-3 victory in game two. Sophomore Kaeliann Glass went 3 for 4 with three runs, three RBIs, and a double, while sophomore Aryka Ortega tossed five innings of one-hit relief to help lift the Cougars to the game-two victory.
 
Game One Recap
 
The Coyotes scored runs in the first and third, and held off several Cougar comeback attempts to post the 2-1 victory.
 
After SMCC left the bases loaded in the top of the first, CGCC got a lead-off triple in the bottom of the first and pushed the run across with a sac fly.
 
SMCC tied the game in the third when Glass singled with one out and scored on an RBI single from freshman GG Moreno.
 
CGCC took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third, cashing in another lead-off triple with an RBI single.
 
The Cougars put two runners on in the sixth and had chances in the sixth and seventh, but could not score the tying run.
 
Freshman Brooklynn Wishart had two stolen bases in the loss.
 
Sophomore Alyssa Jemio (6-3) took the loss with four innings of work in the circle. She allowed five hits, two earned runs, and one walk to go with one strikeout. Sophomore Sadie Su'a tossed the final two innings and fanned four.
 
Game Two Recap
 
The Cougar offense erupted in the late innings and split the doubleheader with a 12-3 victory.
 
CGCC scored two runs in the first and one in the second off Su'a to build an early lead. The Cougars took the lead for good in the top of the third with four runs.
 
Sophomore Eva Harrison drew a walk to start the frame and moved to second when freshman Gabby Rodriguez drew a one-out walk. Su'a singled to load the bases, and freshman Leah Alcala put SMCC on the board with a sac fly. Glass then roped an RBI single that brought in Rodrigurez, and freshman Samantha Macnab reached on an error that allowed Glass and Su'a to score to put SMCC ahead 4-3.
 
Alcala led off the fifth with a triple and scored on an RBI groundout from Glass. In the sixth, sophomore Tazia Blake started the inning with a triple and later scored on a double-steal with Harrison. Rodriguez added a sac fly in the inning that brought in Harrison.
 
In the seventh, Alcala drew a lead-off walk, stole second, and scored on an RBI single from Glass. Macnab drove in Glass with a one-out RBI single, and sophomore Jerzey Jarvis reached on an error with the bases loaded that allowed two runners to score. Rodriguez later added another sac fly to conclude the game's scoring.
 
Rodriguez was 1 for 1 with two RBIs, a run, and a walk, while Harrison scored three runs, stole two bases, and walked once. Jarvis had two RBIs, and Blake scored twice.
 
Ortega (2-4) earned her second win of the season with five innings of relief. She allowed one hit, hit one batter, and walked one to go with one strikeout. Su'a started the game and went two innings with one hit, two earned runs, one walk, and two strikeouts.
