SMCC Softball Sweeps PVCC on Sophomore Day

The South Mountain Community College softball team (35-18, 27-13 ACCAC) swept an ACCAC home doubleheader with Paradise Valley CC on Saturday, April 26, winning 15-5 (5 innings) and 11-1 (5 innings) on Sophomore Day. Three sophomores (Dionna LeanioJada MontoyaJessica Wallace) had three hits and sophomore Sarah Potter homered in the game-one victory. In game two, the Cougars smacked seven home runs as sophomore Nadia Rascon, freshman Kaeliann Glass, and Potter hit two apiece in the 11-1, five-inning victory. 

Game One Recap

SMCC trailed 3-2 entering the bottom of the second but scored three runs in the frame to reclaim the lead. The Cougars added 10 runs over the next two innings to claim the victory. 

Leanio led off the first with a single and scored on an RBI triple from Montoya, and she scored on an RBI groundout by sophomore Michelle Balcazar

In the second, sophomore Jasmyne Campos hit an RBi single that scored sophomore Elise Saucedo, Montoya added a sacrifice fly, and Campos later scored on an error. 

Potter launched a three-run home run in the third, and Rascon, Balcazar, Wallace, and sophomore McKenna Kraft recorded RBIs in the frame. 

Freshman Amry Soriano hit an RBI double, and Rascon added a sac fly in the fourth. 

Leanio was 3 for 3 with three runs and a walk, while Montoya was 3 for 3 with three runs, two RBIs, and a triple. Wallace went 3 for 3 with two runs, a double, and an RBI, and Kraft went 2 for 2 with two runs, one RBI, and one walk. 

Sophomore Alyssa Jemio tossed a complete game in the circle to improve to 11-5 on the season. She allowed seven hits, one earned run, three walks, and three strikeouts over seven innings. 

Game Two Recap

The Cougars' offense exploded for seven home runs and four doubles over four innings en route to the 11-1, five-inning victory in the home finale. 

Montoya hit a solo home run in the first, and Wallace added an RBI single to put SMCC up 2-0. Rascon led off the third with a solo blast, and Glass and Potter went back-to-back with one out in the frame. Sophomore Sabrina Erran added an RBI double, and Leanio roped an RBI triple later in the inning.

Rascon hit another lead-off home run, starting the fourth with another solo blast. Glass and Potter went back-to-back again to put SMCC ahead 11-0. 

Rascon was 3 for 3 with three runs, two home runs, and a double. Glass was 2 for 2 with two runs, three RBIs, and two home runs, and Potter went 2 for 3 with two runs, two RBIs, and two home runs. Kraft and Campos added doubles in the win. 

Freshman Rebekah Mendoza tossed four scoreless innings in the circle to improve to 8-4 on the year. She allowed three hits and one walk to go with one strikeout. Freshman Kayle James threw one inning of relief and allowed two hits, one run, and two walks.
