Cougar Softball Falls Twice to Phoenix College

The South Mountain Community College softball team (7-11, 5-11 ACCAC) lost a pair of Arizona Community College Athletic Conference home games to Phoenix College on Thursday, Mar. 5. The Cougars fell 5-1 and 11-4 to the Bears.

Elisabeth Raby, Ali Ashner and Christian Smith each had a double in game one. Ashner's two-bagger scored Raby in the sixth for the Cougars' lone run of the game. Phoenix College scored a run in the first, two in the third and one apiece in the fifth and the sixth.

Vanessa Gutierrez took the loss for SMCC. She tossed a complete game, finishing with one strikeout.

In game two, the Cougars scored two runs in the bottom of the second to tie the game. However, Phoenix College responded with at least one run in every subsequent inning to sweep the doubleheader.

Jaymie Moore, Adrianaly Morales and Ashner each had two hits in the loss. Moore finished with a double and a stolen base while Ashner also had a double and picked up two RBIs. Morales recoded a stolen base and scored a run.

Jeweliana Navarro went 1 for 3 with an RBI while Destiny Apodaca stole two bases.

Christian Smith (1-3) started the game for SMCC, tossing 4.1 innings with six earned runs. Gutierrez pitched the final 2.2 innings, fanning two batters.
