World Series Bound: SMCC Baseball Repeats as West District Champions

The South Mountain Community College baseball team (46-16) defeated Northern Oklahoma College-Enid 12-3 on May 14 and 7-4 on May 15 at David Allen Memorial Ballpark in Enid, Okla., to win the 2026 NJCAA Division II West District Championship. SMCC has now earned an automatic bid to the 2026 NJCAA Division II World Series, May 23-30, also at David Allen Memorial Ballpark. Game One Recap
The Cougars got outstanding pitching from freshmen Cody Stoller and Izaiah Moraga to win game one of the series, 12-3. Stoller earned the win with five innings of work, allowing five hits, three earned runs, and two walks to go with two strikeouts. Moraga tossed 3.2 innings of hitless relief with four walks and three strikeouts, and sophomore Braeden McCarroll got the final out of the contest.
SMCC jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first. Freshman Brandon Ornelas had an RBI single that scored sophomore Bryan Lorenz, and freshman Aidan Murphy scored after an infield error. Freshman Liu Rodriguez Jr. drove in the final run of the inning with a sac fly that plated Ornelas.
After the Jets got a run in their half of the first, Ornelas led off the third with a solo home run to restore the three-run advantage. The home run was Ornelas' third of the year. Later in the inning, Rodriguez Jr. produced his second sac fly by driving in sophomore Jack Meissner to put SMCC ahead 5-1.
NOC-Enid hit a pair of solo home runs in the bottom of the fourth, but the Cougars responded with two runs in the top of the sixth. Murphy roped an RBI double that scored Lorenz, and Ornelas picked up another RBI with a single that scored Murphy.
In the top of the eighth, Meissner made it 9-3 SMCC with a two-run home run, his third of the year, that scored Ornelas.
In the ninth, SMCC tacked on three more insurance runs. Sophomore Bobby Pierce Jr. drove in Rodriguez Jr. with a groundout, and Murphy collected a two-out, two-run double that plated sophomores Ernie Alvarez and Nuri Todd.
Ornelas went 4 for 6 with three runs, three RBIs, and a double in addition to the homer. Murphy also finished 4 for 6 with two runs, three RBIs, and three doubles.
Lorenz was 3 for 6 with two runs, and Alvarez went 2 for 4 with a run. In addition to the two sac flies, Rodriguez Jr. was 1 for 2 with a run and a walk.
Game Two Recap
The Cougars posted a 7-4 victory to repeat as NJCAA Division II West District Champions. Pierce Jr. led the way offensively, finishing 3 for 3 with two doubles, two runs, one RBI, one walk, and one stolen base. Todd and Lorenz had two hits apiece, with Todd posting a run and an RBI, and Lorenz adding a double and two RBIs.
Playing as the designated home team, Pierce Jr. led off the bottom of the first with a double and scored on a sac fly from Murphy.
In the fourth, Rodriguez Jr. plated Meissner with a sac fly, and Todd delivered a two-out, RBI single that brought in sophomore Luke Hewes.
The Jets scored a run in the sixth to cut the lead to 3-1, but SMCC got the run back immediately in their half of the frame when Alvarez scored on an error.
NOC-Enid cut the lead to 4-3 in the seventh, but sophomore Diego Rodriguez induced a flyout with the tying run on second to end the frame. Alvarez then caught a runner stealing to end the eighth.
The Cougars posted three insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth. Todd led off the inning with a single and scored on an RBI double from Pierce Jr. He then scored on an RBI double from Lorenz, and Murphy later scored on a wild pitch.
Moraga got the final four outs to earn the save. He allowed two hits and one earned run. McCarroll picked up the win with one inning of relief, with two hits, two walks, one run, and one strikeout.
Freshman Gennaro Brito started the game for SMCC and went 4.2 innings with five hits, one walk, and two K's. Rodriguez tossed one inning and walked one batter.
