No. 6 SMCC Baseball Takes Game Two in Series at Southern Nevada

The No. 6 South Mountain Community College baseball team (10-6) won the second game of a three-game series at College of Southern Nevada on Feb. 12-13 in Henderson, Nev. After falling 9-4 on Feb. 12 to the Coyotes, SMCC rebounded with a 12-2, seven-inning victory in the first game of a doubleheader on Friday, Feb. 13. Freshman Brandon Ornelas led the charge offensively, posting three hits, including a double, and three runs, while sophomore Luke Hewes hit a pair of doubles and finished with two runs and two RBIs. Bryan Lorenz and Bobby Pierce Jr. also had two hits in the victory. Unfortunately, the momentum did not carry over to the second game of the twin bill, and CSN defeated SMCC 10-0 in five innings.
 
Feb. 11 Recap
 
Southern Nevada scored four runs in the bottom of the second and led 5-0 after five. The Cougars scratched across three runs in the top of the sixth to climb back within 5-3. However, the Coyotes scored four times in the bottom of the seventh, and SMCC only got one in the top of the eighth.
 
Freshman Liu Rodriguez picked up an RBI single in the sixth, bringing in sophomore Jaden Leon. Lorenz then plated sophomore Nuri Todd and Rodriguez Jr. to bring SMCC within two runs. Pierce Jr. had an RBI single that scored Todd in the eighth.
 
Lorenz was 2 for 4 with two RBIs, a double, and a walk, while Pierce Jr. was 2 for 5 with an RBI. Ornelas, Leon, and sophomore Ernie Alvarez added doubles, and Rodriguez Jr. and Ornelas had stolen bases.
 
Freshman Izaiah Moraga (0-1) took the loss on the mound after making the start. He allowed two hits, two earned runs, and two walks to go with six strikeouts over four innings of work. Sophomore Quinn Robertson tossed 2.2 innings of relief with four unearned runs and three strikeouts, and freshmen Sergio Garcia and Dallas Dunn also saw time in relief.
 
Feb. 12 Game One Recap
 
The Cougars got out to a quick start, scoring four times in the first and once in the second to lead 5-0. After CSN got a pair of runs in the bottom of the third, SMCC pushed three across in the sixth and added four more in the seventh to post the 12-2, seven-inning victory.
 
Lorenz got things started with an RBI single in the first to score Ornelas, and Hewes drove him and Pierce Jr. in with a two-run double. Hewes later scored on a balk to make it 4-0.
 
In the second, freshman Gabe Coltman picked up an RBi groundout that scored Ornelas.
 
In the sixth, Ornelas hit a two-run double that scored Rodriguez and freshman Tommy Woodcock. Pierce Jr. then drove him home with an RBi single to make it 8-2.
 
Freshman Will Strand hit an RBi double in the seventh to score Hewes, and Woodcock and Strand scored on a Coyote error. Sophomore Matthew McGovern later scored in the inning to conclude the game's scoring.
 
Ornelas finished 3 for 5 with three runs, two RBIs, a double, and a stolen base. Hewes was 2 for 4 with two doubles, two runs, and two RBIs. Lorenz went 2 for 3 with a run, an RBI, and a walk, while Woodcock scored twice.  
 
Freshman Cody Stoller (3-0) recorded his third win of the season with five innings of work. He worked around five hits and four walks to finish with two runs and three strikeouts. Sophomore Blake Bell tossed two innings of relief with no hits and one punch-out.
 
Feb. 13 Game Two Recap
 
The Coyotes got one run across in the first and scored seven times in the second. They added two runs in the fourth and limited SMCC to two hits over five frames in the 10-0, five-inning victory.
 
Lorenz and Strand had base hits for SMCC, with Strand recording his second double of the year.
 
Sophomore Lukas Geisler (1-1) took the loss for SMCC, allowing seven hits and eight runs over 1.2 innings. Sophomores Diego Rodriguez and Grant Young saw time in relief.
