No. 8 SMCC Baseball Sweeps Chandler-Gilbert CC, Mesa CC in ACCAC Action

The No. 8 South Mountain Community College baseball team (35-11, 26-4 ACCAC Division II) continued its strong play with a 4-0 record last week, sweeping a two-game series with Chandler-Gilbert CC and Mesa CC. The Cougars posted 12-5 and 13-9 victories over the Coyotes, and then recorded 10-1 (7 innings) and 11-3 (8 innings) wins over the Thunderbirds.

SMCC posted a 12-5 comeback victory on the road on Mar. 31, overcoming a 5-3 deficit with a five-run fifth inning and several late insurance runs to extend the lead.
 
Sophomore Luke Hewes and freshman Aidan Murphy had RBI doubles, and sophomores Nuri Todd and Bobby Pierce Jr. had RBI singles. in the five-run fifth inning to put SMCC ahead 8-5 at its conclusion.
 
Hewes then blasted a solo home run in the sixth, and Murphy added a two-run double in the eighth to put the Cougars up 11-5. Freshman Liu Rodriguez Jr. picked up an RBI single in the ninth that scored Todd.
 
Earlier in the game, freshman Brandon Ornelas and sophomore Jack Meissner had RBI singles in the third, and sophomore Bryan Lorenz added an RBI single in the fourth.
 
Hewes was 3 for 5 with three runs, two RBIs, and a stolen base, while Murphy went 3 for 5 with two runs, three RBIs, and two doubles. Ornelas had two hits, scored two runs, and stole a base, and Pierce Jr. finished with a run, a single, two RBIs, two walks, and a stolen base.
 
Sophomore Quinn Robertson (5-2) earned the win with 3.1 innings of relief work. He allowed three hits, one earned run, and one walk. Freshman Dallas Dunn started the game and went three innings with seven hits, four earned runs, and two strikeouts. Freshman Izaiah Moraga tossed the final 2.2 innings and allowed one hit and one walk to go with three K's.
 
On April Fools Day, SMCC came back from an early 2-0 deficit to down the Coyotes 13-9 at home. Pierce Jr. hit a grand slam in the bottom of the fifth to put SMCC ahead for good, and Meissner and Lorenz added home runs later in the contest to deny any hopes of a Coyote comeback.
 
Meissner launched a two-run shot in the seventh, and Lorenz added a two-run blast in the eighth. Lorenz finished 2 for 5 with two runs, three RBIs, and a double, while Meissner finished with three RBIs.
 
Todd went 2 for 3 with two runs, an RBI, and a walk, and Hewes had two hits and a run. Sophomore Ernie Alvarez scored a run and added a sac bunt.
 
Freshman Denzel Montijo (3-0) earned the win with four innings of shutout relief work. He allowed two hits and two walks to go with two strikeouts. Sophomore Grant Young started the game for SMCC and went two innings with three hits, two earned runs, one walk, and four punchouts.
 
Sophomore Braeden McCarroll went 1.1 innings with two hits, one earned run, one walk, and two strikeouts, and sophomore Diego Rodriguez went 1.2 innings with three K's.
 
Mesa CC Recap
 
The Cougar offense continued to roll, posting a pair of run-rule victories over the Thunderbirds. On Apr. 3, the Cougars traveled to Mesa and handed MCC a 10-1, seven-inning defeat.
 
Freshman Cody Stoller (6-0) earned the win with five innings of work. He allowed five hits, one earned run, one walk, and fanned four. Freshmen Sergio Garcia and Kasen Landry each saw an inning in relief.
 
Offensively, the Cougars scored five runs over the first three innings and then added five runs in the middle frames. Pierce Jr. led the charge at the plate, finishing 3 for 5 with two runs, a double, a triple, an RBI, and a stolen base.
 
Ornelas was 2 for 3 with one run, two RBIs, one walk, and a double, while Murphy totaled two runs, a double, two runs, two walks, and a stolen base. Alvarez was 2 for 3 with a run and an RBI, and Rodriguez Jr. posted two runs, a double, one RBI, and two walks.
 
On Saturday, Apr. 4, the Cougars came to life late with three runs over the sixth and seventh, culminating with a six-run eighth en route to an 11-3 triumph.
 
Pierce Jr. and Rodriguez Jr. had three hits apiece in the victory. Pierce Jr. had two doubles, one triple, two runs, and two RBIs, while Rodriguez Jr. had two runs, one RBI, and a stolen base.
 
Murphy also produced a pair of doubles and added a run and a walk, and Todd scored twice, walked once, and stole a base. Ornelas recorded three RBIs.
 
Moraga (2-2) earned the win with 2.2 innings of hitless relief work. He walked two and fanned two. Sophomore Lukas Geisler started the game for SMCC and went 5.1 innings with eight hits, three earned runs, and two strikeouts.
