No. 9 SMCC Baseball Sweeps ACCAC Series with Paradise Valley CC

The No. 9 South Mountain Community College baseball team (31-11, 22-4 ACCAC Division II) defeated Paradise Valley CC 4-1 at home on Friday, Mar. 27 and 13-4 (8 innings) on the road on Saturday, Mar. 28, in a pair of ACCAC Division II contests. Freshman Aidan Murphy had three hits and scored twice, and freshmen Cody Stoller and Izaiah Moraga teamed up to limit the Pumas to one run over nine innings in the home victory. The following day, SMCC pounded out 19 hits, including three doubles from sophomore Bryan Lorenz, on its way to a 13-4, eight-inning victory.
 
Mar. 27 Recap
 
The Cougars took advantage of a pair of Puma throwing errors to post the 4-1 victory. Murphy led the charge offensively with a 3-for-4 performance, two runs, and a double. Sophomore Luke Hewes also scored twice, and four other Cougars had base hits in the win.
 
Scoreless into the bottom of the fourth, the Cougars scored twice on a throwing error off a batted ball from sophomore Ernie Alvarez.
 
After PVCC got a run in the top of the fifth, the Cougars got two more runs in the bottom of the sixth on another Puma throwing miscue.
 
Stoller (5-0) earned the win with five solid innings on the mound. He allowed seven hits, one earned run, and one walk to go with five strikeouts. Moraga tossed the final four shutout innings and allowed two hits to go with three strikeouts.
 
Mar. 28 Recap
 
The Cougars exploded late, scoring 13 runs over the final four innings to post a 13-4 victory in eight innings.
 
PVCC led 2-0 after three and 4-2 after five innings to set up the late offense. Murphy, Alvarez, and sophomore Nuri Todd singled to start the sixth and load the bases.
 
Sophomore Bobby Pierce Jr. immediately tied the game with a two-run single, and Lorenz put SMCC ahead 5-4 with an RBI groundout that plated Todd.
 
A PVCC error allowed Pierce Jr. to score, and sophomore Jack Meissner made it 7-4 with an RBI single to score freshman Liu Rodriguez Jr.
 
In the eighth, Meissner launched a one-out solo home run to put SMCC ahead by four runs. Alvarez then added a two-run double, Lorenz added an RBI double, and Rodriguez Jr. produced a two-out, two-run single to conclude the game's scoring.
 
Lorenz was 4 for 5 with two runs, two RBIs, and three doubles. Pierce Jr. and Meissner had three hits apiece, with Pierce Jr. adding a triple, two runs, and two RBIs, and Meissner posted a run, three RBIs, a home run, and a stolen base.
 
Murphy, Alvarez, and freshman Brandon Ornelas each had two hits in the win. Alvarez had the team's fourth double, while Murphy scored twice and Ornelas drove in a run.
 
Sophomore Braeden McCarroll (5-1) earned the win with 2.1 innings of relief work. He scattered four hits and fanned four. Sophomore Lukas Geisler started the game for SMCC and went 4.2 innings with five hits, two earned runs, and one strikeout. Freshman Kasen Landry tossed the eighth for SMCC and had one punchout.
