The No. 5 South Mountain Community College baseball team (38-14, 29-7 ACCAC Division II) finished 1-2 in ACCAC Division II play last week, falling 16-15 at Scottsdale CC on April 14 and 3-2 at Glendale CC on April 17 before posting a 9-0 (7 innings) home victory over GateWay CC. Sophomore Lukas Geisler tossed six innings of two-hit shutout baseball against the Geckos to help the Cougars snap a three-game losing streak.
Scottsdale CC Recap
The Cougars and Fighting Artichokes engaged in a back-and-forth affair. SMCC took a 15-12 lead in the top of the eighth, only for SCC to hit a grand slam in the bottom half to escape with the 16-15 victory.
SCC jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first inning and led 7-1 after four full innings. The Cougars closed to within 7-6 in the top of the fifth, but the Artichokes immediately responded with three runs in their half to re-establish a 10-6 advantage.
SMCC pulled to within 10-9 in the sixth and took a 12-10 lead in the top of the seventh. SCC tied the game at 12-12 in the bottom of the seventh to set up the eighth-inning dramatics.
Sophomores Bryan Lorenz and Nuri Todd led the Cougar offense with three hits apiece. Lorenz scored twice and drove in one, while Todd had two doubles, two runs, two RBIs, one stolen base, and one walk.
Sophomore Gavin Short hit his second home run of the season and finished with three runs, two RBIs, and two walks.
Sophomore Bobby Pierce Jr. had a pair of doubles and added four RBIs and a run, and sophomore Ernie Alvarez had the team's fifth double in addition to three runs and a walk.
Freshman Aidan Murphy posted two runs, two RBIs, two stolen bases, a single, and a walk, and sophomore Jack Meissner recorded a two-run single.
Freshman Denzel Montijo (3-1) took the loss on the mound for SMCC. Dallas Dunn started the game for the Cougars, and Grant Young, Quinn Robertson, Caden Robinett, and Braeden McCarroll saw time in relief.
Glendale CC Recap
The Cougars jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, but the Gauchos got runs in the third and sixth to tie the game.
SMCC had a chance to push the go-ahead run in the ninth, but GCC got out of the frame unscathed and pushed across one in the bottom half to pick up the 3-2 victory.
Lorenz went 2 for 3 with a run and a walk to lead the SMCC offense. Pierce Jr. scored the team's second run, and Murphy and freshman Brandon Ornelas recorded RBIs for the Cougars. Short, Todd, and Alvarez also recorded hits.
Freshman Izaiah Moraga (5-3) took the loss on the mound. He allowed four hits, one earned run, and two walks to go with six strikeouts in 2.2 innings of relief work. Freshman Cody Stoller started the game for SMCC and went 5.2 innings with seven hits, two earned runs, and three walks with four strikeouts.

Geisler was outstanding on the mound, allowing just two hits over six innings to help the Cougars snap their three-game losing streak and post a 9-0 (seven innings) victory. He fanned five and did not walk a batter.
SMCC scored seven runs in the second and added a pair in the fifth to post the run-rule victory.
Murphy and Todd led the Cougar offense with two hits each. Todd recorded his third double of the week and added two RBIs and a run. Murphy finished with a run and an RBI.
Ornelas went 1 for 2 with two runs and two stolen bases, and Lorenz finished with two RBIs. Freshman Gabe Coltman also went 1 for 2 and posted two runs and an RBI.
Robinett and freshman Gennaro Brito saw time in relief in the win.
