No. 6 SMCC Baseball Sweeps Conference Series with PVCC, CGCC

The No. 6 South Mountain Community College baseball team (16-8, 9-3 ACCAC Division II) swept ACCAC Division II series with Paradise Valley CC and Chandler-Gilbert CC last week. The Cougars started the week with 8-0 and 18-7 (5 innings) victories over the Pumas, and followed that up with 7-5 and 19-6 (8 innings) wins against the Coyotes.
 
Game One (Feb. 24) vs. Paradise Valley CC
 
Freshman Denzel Montijo (1-0) picked up his first win of the season with six innings of two-hit, shutout baseball to help lift the Cougars to an 8- 0 road victory on Tuesday, Feb. 24. Montijo fanned six, walked one, and retired the side in order in four different frames. Freshman Dallas Dunn tossed the seventh inning and had one punchout.
 
Offensively, sophomores Luke Hewes and Ernie Alvarez had two hits apiece in the victory. Hewes was 2 for 3 with two runs, two stolen bases, an RBI, a walk, and a solo home run to lead off the fifth. Alvarez was 2 for 3 with two runs.
 
Sophomore Bryan Lorenz scored twice, and sophomore Jack Meissner walked twice, scored once, and posted an RBI.
 
SMCC went ahead in the second on a double-steal where Hewes took second, and Meissner scored. Hewes would later score in the frame on a passed ball to put SMCC up 2-0.
 
In the third, an error off the bat of Lorenz allowed sophomore Bobby Pierce Jr. to score, and freshman Brandon Ornelas followed that up with an RBI single to plate Alvarez. Meissner added an RBI groundout that scored Lorenz to increase the advantage to five.
 
Another PVCC error in the fourth allowed two more runs to score, and Hewes' solo blast concluded the scoring.
 
Game Two (Feb. 25) vs. Paradise Valley CC
 
A 10-run third inning fueled the Cougars to an 18-7, five-inning home victory over the Pumas. SMCC scored multiple runs in four of the five frames, and Pierce Jr. hit a walk-off, two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth to enact the run rule.
 
PVCC struck first, scoring five runs in the first off SMCC starter Braeden McCarroll. However, the Cougars responded with two runs in their half as Ornelas produced an RBI single that scored Pierce Jr., and Meissner singled to score Alvarez.
 
After PVCC made it 6-2 in the top of the third, the Cougars pushed 10 runs across in the bottom half to take a commanding lead. Alvarez singled, Lorenz walked, and Ornelas singled to load the bases at the start of the inning. Meissner singled to bring in Alvarez, and freshman Gabe Coltman added a two-run double that scored Lorenz and Ornelas.
 
SMCC tied the game on a sac bunt from sophomore Derek Montijo, and Pierce Jr. connected on a two-out, two-run double that scored Coltman and sophomore Nuri Todd and put SMCC ahead 8-6. Alvarez followed that up with an RBI single, Lorenz posted an RBI double, Ornelas added another RBI double, and Meissner recorded his second RBI single of the inning to put SMCC ahead 12-6.
 
PVCC got a run in the top of the fourth, but Lorenz roped a two-run single in the bottom half that scored Pierce Jr. and Montijo.
 
In the bottom of the fifth, a Coltman triple scored Meissner, Todd doubled in Coltman, and Pierce Jr. ended the game with a blast to right.
 
Meissner was a perfect 3 for 3 with three RBIs, two runs, and a walk. Pierce Jr., Alvarez, Lorenz, Ornelas, Coltman and Todd all had two hits in the victory. Alvarez added a stolen base, while Pierce Jr. had four RBIs and Lorenz drove in three.
 
Freshman Caden Robinett (2-0) picked up the win with 1.1 innings of hitless relief. He had one strikeout. McCarroll went 3.2 innings with 11 hits, six earned runs, one walk, and four strikeouts.
 
Game One (Feb. 27) vs. Chandler-Gilbert CC
 
SMCC scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth to rally for a 7-5 home victory over CGCC. Freshman Liu Rodriguez Jr. put SMCC ahead for good with a two-out, two-run single in the fifth.
 
SMCC led 2-0 after one as Mesisner delivered a two-out, two-run single that scored Pierce Jr. and Lorenz.
 
However, the Coyotes scored five runs over the second and third innings, thanks in part to a pair of home runs.
 
With one out in the fifth, Todd singled, and Pierce Jr. walked. Todd stole third and scored on a throwing error, and Pierce Jr. later scored on a passed ball to make it 5-4.
 
With two outs, Hewes drew a walk to load the bases, and Rodriguez singled up the middle to score Lorenz and Meissner.
 
Pierce Jr. scored twice and had a stolen base, while Lorenz scored twice and added a triple. Meissner and Rodriguez had two RBIs apiece, and Ornelas added an RBI.
 
Freshman Cody Stoller (4-0) earned the win with seven strong innings on the hill. He overcame those early runs and finished with five strikeouts. Sophomore Diego Rodriguez recorded the save with two innings of relief, with one K.
 
Game Two (Feb. 28) vs. Chandler-Gilbert CC
 
SMCC rallied again to defeat CGCC, overcoming a 6-2 deficit after four innings. The Cougars scratched across a run in the fifth and sixth, scored four times in the sixth to take an 8-6 lead, and then pushed across 11 in the eighth to post the 19-6, eight-inning victory.
 
In the second, Meissner plated Ornelas with an RBI single, and he later scored on a sac bunt from Rodriguez Jr.
 
Trailing 6-2 in the fifth, Alvarez brought SMCC to within three with a sac fly that scored Todd. In the sixth, a pitch hit Meissner to start the frame, he moved to third on a pair of wild pitches, and Hewes brought him in with another sac fly.
 
Todd walked to start the seventh and moved to third on a single from Pierce Jr. Alvarez produced his second sac fly of the game to score Todd and bring SMCC to within 6-5, and Pierce Jr. scored on a passed ball to tie the game. SMCC then took an 8-6 lead on a two-out two-run single from Hewes.
 
Alvarez had an RBI double that scored Todd with one out in the eighth, and Meissner, Hewes, Rodriguez Jr., sophomore Gavin Short, Todd, and Pierce Jr. all picked up RBIs with the bases loaded. Alvarez then added a two-run double, and Lorenz posted a sac fly to put SMCC ahead 19-6.
 
Pierce Jr. went 4 for 6 with two runs and two RBIs. Alvarez was 3 for 4 with five RBIs, two runs, two doubles, and two sac flies.
 
Hewes was 2 for 2 and drove in four, and Rodriguez Jr. and Meissner had two RBIs each. Meissner and Todd scored four times.
 
Sophomore Sam Yeager (2-0) earned his second win of the year with four innings of relief. He allowed three hits, no runs, and struck out seven Coyotes. Sophomore Lukas Geisler started the game and went three innings with five hits, six runs, two walks, and one strikeout. Sophomore Blake Bell tossed the eighth and fanned three of the four batters he faced.
