No. 5 SMCC Baseball Sweeps Twin Bill at Pima CC

The No. 5 South Mountain Community College baseball team (37-11, 28-4 ACCAC Division II) swept an ACCAC Division II road doubleheader at Pima CC on Tuesday, April 7. The Cougars held on for a wild 13-12 seven-inning victory in game one behind home runs from sophomore Jack Meissner and freshman Liu Rodriguez Jr. In game two, SMCC posted a 14-9 win as Rodriguez went deep for the second time and sophomore Bryan Lorenz added a home run.
Game One Recap
The Cougars led 13-4 after the fifth inning, but the Aztecs refused to go quietly. They scored eight runs across the sixth and seventh before sophomore Braeden McCarroll got the final out to earn the save and seal the victory.
Meissner launched a two-run home run in the second to put SMCC on the scoreboard, and sophomore Nuri Todd added an RBI double later in the frame that brought in sophomore Luke Hewes.
Rodriguez Jr. made it 5-1 in the third with a two-run homer that brought in Lorenz. Meissner, Todd, and Lorenz all added RBI singles in the frame, and SMCC led 9-1 at the inning's conclusion.
The Cougars added a run in the fourth, and Todd scored on a Lorenz RBI single and sophomore Bobby Pierce Jr. scored on a wild pitch in the fifth.
Lorenz finished 4 for 5 with two runs and two RBIs, while Rodriguez Jr. was 2 for 4 with two RBIs. Meissner went 2 for 2 with three RBIs, and Todd was 2 for 2 with two runs, two RBIs, a double, and a walk. Ornelas scored three times in the win.
Freshman Izaiah Moraga earned the win with 2.2 innings of relief. He allowed six hits, five earned runs and two walks, while fanning one.
Freshman Dallas Dunn started the game for SMCC and went 2.1 innings with three hits, one earned run, and three strikeouts. Sophomore Diego Rodriguez and freshman Caden Robinett saw time in relief, and McCarroll went one inning with one K to earn the save.
Game Two Recap
The Cougars overcame an early 4-0 deficit to lead 9-4 after four innings. However, the Aztecs scored five in the bottom of the fifth to tie the contest before SMCC immediately responded with three runs in the top of the sixth. The Cougars added two insurance runs in the eighth to post the 14-9 victory.
Lorenz started the scoring with a three-run home run in the third that scored sophomore Ernie Alvarez, and Pierce Jr. Hewes added an RBI single that scored freshman Brandon Ornelas. Freshman Aidan Murphy drove in sophomore Gavin Short with an RBI single, and Hewes scored on an error later in the inning.
In the fourth, Rodriguez Jr. brought in Pierce Jr. with an RBI single, and Lorenz scored on a passed ball. Rodriguez Jr. then put SMCC ahead for good with a two-run home run in the sixth that scored Lorenz. Short later roped a double and came all the way around to score after an error by the right fielder.
Freshman Gabe Coltman collected an RBI double in the eighth that scored Rodriguez Jr., and Short later scored on a wild pitch to put SMCC ahead 14-9.
Rodriguez Jr. finished 3 for 6 with three runs and three RBIs, while Lorenz was 2 for 5 with three runs, three RBIs, and one walk. Pierce Jr. was 2 for 6 with two runs, and Hewes was 2 for 4 with one run and an RBI. Alvarez had the team's third double and scored a run.
Sophomore Quinn Robertson (6-2) tossed 3.1 innings of relief to earn the win. He finished with seven hits, five earned runs, one walk, and three strikeouts. Freshman Denzel Montijo earned the save with 2.2 innings of relief with no hits and two K's.
Freshman Gennaro Brito started the game for SMCC and went 1.2 innings with seven hits, three earned runs, one walk, and one strikeout. Freshman Sergio Garcia threw 1.1 innings of shutout relief work with a strikeout.
