The No. 4 South Mountain Community College baseball team stayed busy over its spring break, playing a total of seven games during the week. SMCC opened the holiday with a two-game sweep of Scottsdale CC, posting 12-3 (7 innings) and 8-5 victories over the Fighting Artichokes. The Cougars then hosted No. 10 Madison College (WI) in a three-game series between two 2025 NJCAA Division II World Series, and the Wolfpack walked away with two road victories sandwiched around a 10-0, five-inning SMCC victory. Finally, SMCC swept an ACCAC Division II series with Glendale CC over Mar. 20-21 with the Cougars prevailing 8-4 in both victories.

The Cougars secured a pair of ACCAC Division II victories over SCC, winning 12-3 (7 innings) on the road on Mar. 13 before rallying for an 8-5 home victory on Mar. 14.
In game one, sophomore Bobby Pierce Jr. finished 3 for 5 with three runs, two home runs, and a career-high six RBIs. He hit a grand slam in the top of the fourth and a solo blast in the top of the sixth.
Sophomore Jack Meissner and freshman Liu Rodriguez Jr. also had three hits in the victory. Meissner had two RBIs and a run, while Rodriguez Jr. scored twice, stole a base, and drove in one.
Sophomore Nuri Todd and freshman Nathan Bayus each scored twice, with Todd collecting a double and a walk and Bayus stealing a base.
Sophomore Quinn Robertson (3-1) earned the win on the mound with 1.1 innings of relief work. He allowed two hits, one earned run, and one walk. Freshman Cody Stoller started the game for SMCC and went 3.2 innings with six hits, three strikeouts, and one unearned run. Freshmen Gennaro Brito and Denzel Montijo each pitched an inning of shutout relief.
The Cougars scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth in game two at home to post the 8-5 victory on Mar. 14.
Sophomore Luke Hewes started the rally with a lead-off walk in the eighth and moved to second when Rodriguez Jr. also drew a free pass. Sophomore Matthew McGover ran for Hewes, and he and Rodriguez executed a double-steal to get into scoring position.
With two outs, SCC intentionally walked Pierce Jr. to load the bases, and McGovern scored on a wild pitch to break the 5-5 tie. Sophomore Ernie Alvarez drew a walk to reload the bases, and sophomore Bryan Lorenz picked up a two-out, two-run single to put SMCC ahead 8-5.
Sophomore Braeden McCarroll (2-1) worked around a two-out error in the ninth to earn the win. He tossed 2.1 innings of relief with three strikeouts, one hit, and one walk.
SMCC led 5-1 after four innings, but SCC fought back with one run in the fifth and three in the seventh to tie the game. Pierce Jr. singled to start the first, moved to third on a double by Alvarez, and scored on a groundout from Lorenz. Meissner then plated Alvarez with a sac fly. Todd, Hewes, and Meissner added RBIs over the next three innings.
Hewes went 2 for 3 with a run, a double, and an RBI, while Rodriguez Jr. was 2 for 3 with a run, a stolen base and a walk. Freshman Brandon Ornelas had the team's third double, and Meissner roped his first triple of the season.
Sophomore Lukas Geisler started the game for SMCC and went four innings with four hits, one earned run, three walks, and three strikeouts. Freshmen Sergio Garcia and Caden Robinett and sophomore Diego Rodriguez all saw time in relief as well.
No. 10 Madison College Series Recap
The two nationally ranked squads battled three times at the SMCC Baseball Field, with Madison College winning 8-3 on Mar. 17 and 6-1 on Mar. 18. The Cougars secured game two of the series with a 10-0 (5 innings) victory in game two of a doubleheader on St. Patrick's Day.
In game one, the Cougars led 2-0 after four innings with Lorenz hitting a solo home run in the third and Rodriguez Jr. driving in Ornelas with an RBI single in the fourth.
However, the Wolfpack scored five runs in the fifth to take the lead. Todd had an RBI single in the sixth that drew SMCC within 5-3, but Madison College scored three times in the seventh to secure the victory in the first game of a doubleheader.
Rodriguez went a perfect 3 for 3 at the plate with two stolen bases and an RBI, while Lorenz was 2 for 4 with a run, an RBI, a double, and a home run. Ornelas scored twice and had a stolen base, and Pierce Jr. and Todd also had stolen bases.
Robertson (3-2) took the loss on the mound after allowing two hits and four earned runs. Montijo started the game and went four innings with two hits, one earned run, two walks, and three strikeouts. Brito and Robinett also saw time in relief.
The Cougars responded quickly with a 10-0, five-inning victory in the second game of the twin bill. SMCC scored six runs in the first, two in the second, and two in the third.
Meissner was a perfect 3 for 3 with two runs and two RBIs, while Lorenz went 1 for 1 with two runs, two RBIs, a walk, and a sac fly. Freshman Tommy Woodcock had a two-run double, and Pierce Jr. scored twice and added a run and a walk.
Hewes, Todd, and freshman Gabe Coltman picked up RBIs, and Ornelas and Rodriguez Jr. scored once.
Freshman Dallas Dunn (2-0) earned the win on the mound with five innings of shutout work. He allowed four hits and fanned six.
The rubber match went to the Wolfpack in a 6-1 victory on Wednesday, Mar. 18. Madison College scored a run in the first and third, and plated four in the fifth. SMCC pushed one across in the bottom of the ninth to avoid the shutout, as Pierce Jr. had an RBI single that scored Rodriguez Jr.
Lorenz had two hits and two stolen bases, and Meissner and Todd also had hits.
Freshman Kasen Landry started the game for SMCC. He went 1.2 innings with three hits, one earned run, and two strikeouts to take the loss. Sophomores Grant Young, Blake Bell, and Sam Yeager saw time in relief, as did Garcia and Rodriguez.

The Cougars scored a pair of 8-4 victories over the Gauchos to wrap up their Spring Break festivities. Freshman Aidan Murphy, Lorenz, Pierce Jr., and Todd homered in the Mar. 20 home victory, and SMCC scored three runs in the eighth to put the Mar. 21 game away.
On Mar. 20, SMCC led 2-0 through four before GCC scored twice in the fifth to tie the game. The Cougars immediately retook the lead when Lorenz led off the Cougar half of the inning with a solo home run.
However, the Gauchos hit a two-run home run to take a 4-3 lead in the top of the sixth. Todd led off the seventh with the first home run of the season, and Pierce Jr. made it back-to-back to give SMCC the lead. Meissner later added a two-out RBI single to score Ornelas and put SMCC ahead 6-4.
Murphy led off the eighth with his first home run of the year, and Rodriguez Jr. added a sac fly to conclude the scoring.
Pierce Jr. was 3 for 5 with two runs, a stolen base, and a double in addition to his home run, while Ornleas was 3 for 4 with two RBIs, a run, a walk, and a stolen base.
Todd was 2 for 4 with a run, a stolen base, and an RBI, and Lorenz was 2 for 4 with a run, an RBI, and a walk.
Freshman Izaiah Moraga (3-2) earned the win with four innings of relief work. He allowed three hits, two earned runs, and one walk to go with three strikeouts. Stoller started the game and went five innings with four hits, two earned runs, one walk, and seven K's.
In the Mar. 21 contest, SMCC broke a 1-1 tie with three runs in the fifth and held off the Gauchos to win the contest 8-4. SMCC added three insurance runs in the eighth after taking an 8-5 lead into the frame.
Lorenz hit a three-run double in the fifth that scored Pierce Jr., Todd, and Alvarez. Meissner scored on an error in the sixth, and GCC errors gave way to runs by McGovern, Hewes, and Murphy.
Alvarez was a perfect 3 for 3 with two RBIs, a stolen base, a sac bunt, and a run, while Lorenz finished 2 for 4 with four RBIs, a walk, and a double. Rodriguez Jr. and Meissner added doubles for SMCC, with Meissner also scoring twice.
Robertson (4-2) earned the win with five innings after tossing five innings in relief. He allowed three hits and two earned runs while fanning five. Geisler started the game for SMCC and went four innings with four hits, one earned run, three walks, and four K's.
