No. 5 SMCC Baseball Falls to Phoenix College

The No. 5 South Mountain Community College baseball team (37-12, 28-5 ACCAC Division II) lost 15-7 at Phoenix College in an ACCAC Division II road game on Saturday, April 11. Sophomores Bobby Pierce Jr. and Nuri Todd homered, and freshman Brandon Ornelas posted three hits and a stolen base in defeat for the Cougars.
After the Bears scored a run in the bottom of the first, SMCC took a 6-1 lead in the third behind a grand slam from Pierce Jr. and a two-out, two-run single from freshman Aidan Murphy.
PC immediately tied the game in the bottom of the third before Todd led off the fourth with a solo shot. The Bears reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the frame with two runs and scored seven in the bottom of the seventh to end things early.
Ornelas was 3 for 4 with a run and a stolen base, while Todd went 2 for 3 with two runs, an RBI, and a walk. Freshman Liu Rodriguez Jr. posted a single, a run, a walk, and a stolen base.
Sophomore Lukas Geisler (2-2) took the loss on the mound with 1.2 innings of relief, allowing four hits and two earned runs. Freshman Cody Stoller started the game for SMCC and went two innings with seven hits, four earned runs, three walks, and three strikeouts.
Sophomore Braeden McCarroll, freshman Izaiah Moraga, freshman Denzel Montijo and sophomore Quinn Robertson also saw time in relief for the Cougars.
