PHOENIX ---
The No. 10 South Mountain Community College baseball team (40-16, 31-9 ACCAC Division II) wrapped up its 2026 regular-season schedule with four games last week, defeating Chandler-Gilbert CC and Mesa CC while falling to Paradise Valley CC and Pima CC. Despite the setbacks, the Cougars won the 2026 ACCAC Division II Regular Season title by eight games and will host fourth-seeded Glendale CC in a Region I Division II Tournament Semifinal on April 30, May 1, and May 2 if necessary.
SMCC fell 6-0 at PVCC on April 21, but rebounded with a 10-0, five-inning victory over Chandler-Gilbert CC on April 22. SMCC then posted an 11-1, six-inning triumph over Mesa CC on April 24 before falling 10-7 to Pima CC on April 25 in the regular-season finale.
PVCC Recap
Sophomore Bryan Lorenz had three hits, including a pair of doubles, and freshman Aidan Murphy had two hits in a 6-0 loss at PVCC. That represented just about all the offense SMCC could muster, although sophomores Nuri Todd, Luke Hewes, and Bobby Pierce Jr. drew walks.
The Pumas broke through with a run in the fourth, two in the sixth and seventh, and one in the eighth.
Freshman Gennaro Brito (0-3) started the game and took the loss on the mound with four innings of work. He allowed two hits, one earned run, and one walk to go with one strikeout. Sophomores Braeden McCarroll and Diego Rodriguez and freshman Kasen Landry saw time in relief.
CGCC Recap
Sophomore Grant Young allowed one hit over five innings to improve to 2-0 on the season. He fanned one and walked one, and the SMCC offense scored at least one run in every inning to defeat the Coyotes. CGCC finished as the No. 3 seed in the Region I Division II Tournament and will play a best-of-three series at No. 2 Scottsdale CC.
Lorenz was a perfect 4 for 4 with two runs, a double, and an RBI. Sophomore Gavin Short smacked a three-run double in the fourth and finished 2 for 3 with a run. Freshman Will Strand went 2 for 3 with a double, a triple, a run, and an RBI in the win.
Freshman Gabe Coltman had a pair of RBIs, and Murphy went 2 for 3 with two runs, an RBI, a stolen base, and a walk. Pierce Jr. scored twice, stole a base, and drew a walk, and freshmen Liu Rodriguez Jr. and Tommy Woodcock added RBIs.
Mesa CC Recap
Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the third, SMCC scored three times and then posted at least a run over the next three frames, including a five-run sixth to defeat the Thunderbirds 11-1.
Sophomore Jack Meissner led the SMCC with three hits, including a double, and had a run and an RBI. Murphy, Lorenz, and Pierce Jr. all scored twice and had triples, and Short joined Meissner with a double.
Hewes hit a solo home run, his fifth of the season, to start the scoring in the sixth, and sophomore Nuri Todd was 2 for 3 with two runs, a stolen base, and an RBI. Lorenz and Pierce Jr. each had two RBIs.
On the mound, freshman Cody Stoller (7-0) earned the win after going four innings. He allowed three hits and one earned run while fanning six. Freshman Denzel Montijo pitched the final two innings and allowed one hit with three K's.
Pima CC Recap
