PHOENIX ---
The No. 6 South Mountain Community College baseball team (5-3) defeated Phoenix College 12-1 (7 innings) on Jan. 30 and 7-3 on Jan. 31 in a pair of non-conference contests. In the Jan. 30 road victory, four Cougars had two hits apiece, and SMCC pushed nine runs across in the top of the first to post the victory. The next day, SMCC got two more runs in the first, added five in the fifth, and held off a Bear rally in the seventh to secure the win.
Jan. 30 Recap
The Cougars jumped all over the Bears, scoring nine runs in the first inning en route to a 12-1, seven-inning road victory. Four Cougars had two hits in the victory: Bobby Pierce Jr., Brandon Ornelas, Jack Meissner, and Ernie Alvarez. The Cougars totaled six doubles, a triple, and three stolen bases.
Pierce Jr. started the game with a double into right, and Ornelas moved him to third with another two-bagger. Sophomore Bryan Lorenz drew a walk to load the bases, and Pierce Jr. scored on a passed ball in the next at-bat to give SMCC their first run. That batter, Jaden Leon, cleared the bases with a two-run double, and after Meissner reached on an error, sophomore Gavin Short brought in Leon with an RBI single.
A pitch hit sophomore Nuri Todd to re-load the baes and freshman Will Strand promptly delivered a two-run single up the middle to make it 6-0. Todd and Strand executed a double steal to move into scoring position, and Todd scored on an error on the play. Batting for the second time in the frame, Pierce Jr. tripled to center to score Strand, and he later scored on an RBI single from Lorenz to conclude the scoring.
The Bears scored a two-out, unearned run in their half of the first, but SMCC pitching kept their bats quiet overall.
Freshman Kasen Landry started the game for the Cougars and went three innings with three hits and three strikeouts. Freshman Caden Robinett tossed an inning of relief with one strikeout, and freshman Cody Stoller went two innings with three K's and four hits. Freshman Gennaro Brito threw the seventh and allowed one hit and one walk.
SMCC made it 10-1 in the top of the fourth when Leon scored on a passed ball, and the seventh saw Alvarez double home Strand and Ornelas bring in Alvarez with his second double of the day.
