SMCC Baseball Extends Winning Streak with Wins over PVCC

The South Mountain Community College baseball team extended its winning streak to six games with a pair of wins over Paradise Valley Community College. On Feb. 25, the Cougars posted a 4-1 road win and followed that with an 8-3 home victory on Feb. 26.

SMCC returns to action with games against Chandler-Gilbert Community College. The Cougars host the Coyotes on Friday, Feb. 28 at 3 p.m., and then travel for a road game on Saturday, Feb. 29 at 6 p.m.

In the first game, Jake Sansing delivered a strong performance on the mound to earn the win. The sophomore threw 6.0 innings, scattering five hits and an earned run to go with two strikeouts.

Parker Warkelyn recorded the save, tossing the final 1.2 innings without allowing a hit. Damien Hernandez and Shawn Triplett also pitched for the Cougars in the victory.

Davis Heller and Efrain Cervantes each had two hits for SMCC. Cervantes scored two runs and had a double while Heller had two RBIs. Dustin Bermudez, JD Wadleigh, Ricky Munoz and Brodie Marino all had base hits for the Cougars.

South Mountain Community College broke a scoreless tie with two runs in the top of the fourth. Both teams scored a run in the sixth, and SMCC added an insurance run in the top of the ninth.

In the second game, the Cougars struck early to take a 4-0 lead through four full innings. SMCC would add two runs in the seventh and eighth to secure its sixth-straight win.

Heller went a perfect 3 for 3 in the win, recording a double and an RBI. Marino recorded a pair of doubles and had two RBIs. Justin Quinn also had two hits and two RBIs, and Jake Haze scored two runs.

Bermudez started for SMCC and recorded the win after working 5.0 innings. He allowed one hit and had two strikeouts. Brendan Anderson, Israel Gutierrez, Trey Goodrich and Derek Decolati each made a relief appearance for the Cougars.
