SMCC Women's Basketball Falls to CGCC in ACCAC Opener

The South Mountain Community College women's basketball team (3-3, 0-1 ACCAC Division II) lost 97-47 at Chandler-Gilbert CC on Nov. 25 in both teams' ACCAC Division II opener. Freshman forward Tyra Holyan recorded her second-straight double-double, finishing with 25 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Cougars. However, the Coyotes jumped out to a big lead in the first half to lift them to the victory.
SMCC trailed 27-7 after 10 minutes and went into halftime behind 51-17. The Coyotes continued their strong play in the second half, winning the frame 46-30. The Cougars shot 25.9 percent (15 of 58) for the game and finished with 33 rebounds, 10 assists, nine steals, and two blocks in the loss.
Holyan finished 8 of 14 from the field and 9 of 10 from the free-throw line to post her fourth game of more than 20 points this season. She added two assists, three steals, and two blocks in the contest.
Freshman Victoria Benito was second on the team with eight points. She went 6 of 7 from the free-throw line and added two rebounds, two assists, and a steal. Freshman Janelle Smith recorded six points, four rebounds, one assist, and one steal, and freshman Kashari Bullard grabbed a season-high five rebounds.
