The South Mountain Community College women's basketball team used a big second quarter, outscoring Yavapai College 22-7 in the frame en route to a 75-60 non-conference victory at the SMCC Gym on Nov. 11. Sophomore Sadie Gardner set new career highs in points (24) and 3-pointers (6) for the second-straight game, freshman Tyra Holyan scored 21, and freshman Victoria Benito finished with 11 to fuel the Cougars' victory.
Trailing 15-14 after the opening 10 minutes, the Cougars shot 40.9 percent (9 of 22) overall and 44.4 percent (4 of 9) from 3-point range in the second quarter. Gardner and freshman Jayden Lynch each had two 3-pointers in the frame, and Holyan also added six points on 3 for 3 shooting. Freshman Ramona Gregg posted six rebounds, four assists, and a block in the frame.
The Cougars carried a 36-22 advantage into halftime, and the second half was a much more even affair with the Cougars edging the Roughriders 39-38. SMCC finished the game shooting 37.8 percent (28 of 74) from the floor and 40 percent (10 of 25) from 3-point range. The Cougars added 57 rebounds, 18 assists, seven blocks, and 15 steals in the victory.
Gardner was 6 of 13 from 3-point range and added six free throws to set a new personal scoring best for the second-straight game. She added five assists, four rebounds, and four steals in 35 minutes.
Holyan finished 10 of 17 from the floor and added seven rebounds, three blocks, three steals, and two assists in 36 minutes. Benito was 4 of 11 from the floor in 31 minutes, adding six rebounds, three steals and an assist.
Gregg and freshman Janelle Smith led SMCC with 11 rebounds. Gregg added four assists, two blocks, and a steal in 22 minutes, while Smith posted seven points, three steals, three assists, and two blocks in 22 minutes. Lynch recorded eight points, seven rebounds, two assists, and a steal in 37 minutes.
The Cougars scored 22 points off 25 Roughrider turnovers and registered 11 fast-break points.
