Cougar Women's Basketball Posts 72-54 Victory over Park-Gilbert (JV)

Freshman Tyra Holyan scored 30 points, sophomore Sadie Gardner added a career-high 19, and freshman Ramona Gregg registered a double-double (11 points, 14 rebounds) to lead the South Mountain Community College women's basketball team to a 72-54 victory over Park-Gilbert (JV) at the SMCC Gym on Saturday, Nov. 8. 

SMCC led 21-16 after the first quarter and carried a 34-30 advantage into halftime. The Cougars outscored the Buccaneers 38-24 in the second half to seal the victory. SMCC finished 25 of 68 (36.8 percent) from the field and 16 of 23 (69.6 percent) from the free-throw line.

The Cougars out-rebounded Park-Gilbert (JV) 55-37 with 20 boards coming on the offensive glass, resulting in 12 second-chance points. SMCC also had 18 assists, 16 steals, and one block in the victory. 

Holyan scored 14 of her 30 points in the fourth quarter and finished the game 12 of 19 from the field and 6 of 6 from the free-throw line. She added four rebounds, six steals, two assists, and a block in 32 minutes of work. 

Gardner knocked down five 3-pointers and added six rebounds, four assists, and three steals to her 19 points in 33 minutes. She knocked down two 3-pointers in the first quarter and added three more in the third to set a new personal scoring best. 

Gregg was 3 of 7 from the floor and 5 of 6 from the free-throw line in 32 minutes, with five of her 14 rebounds coming on the offensive end. She also had three assists and a steal. 

Freshman Jayden Lynch led SMCC with seven assists and added five points, two rebounds, and a steal in 34 minutes. Freshman Victoria Benito finished with six points, seven rebounds, two assists, and two steals in 24 minutes.  Freshman Janelle Smith recorded six rebounds and three steals off the bench. 

SMCC's lead swelled to as many as 24 with 3:34 to play following a pair of Gregg free throws. The game featured four ties and six lead changes. The victory represented the first as a Cougar for first-year head coach Sabah Dickerson.
