SMCC Women's Basketball Falls to Southern Nevada

The South Mountain Community College women's basketball team (2-2) lost 84-55 to Southern Nevada in a non-conference contest at the SMCC Gym on Nov. 15. Sophomore Sadie Gardner scored 17 points, including five 3-pointers, and freshman Ramona Gregg grabbed 12 rebounds, but the Coyotes forced 21 Cougar turnovers and scored 22 fast-break points in the win.
SMCC trailed 17-9 after 10 minutes and 40-26 at halftime after shooting 25 percent (8 for 32). Gardner had eight points while Gregg had 10 rebounds, including five offensive boards, at the break. CSN then captured the second half 44-29 to secure the road victory.
SMCC shot 26.9 percent (18 of 67) from the field and 31.8 percent (7 of 22) from 3-point range. The Cougars finished with 43 rebounds, nine assists, four steals, and three blocks in the loss.
Gardner was 5 of 10 from 3-point range in 24 minutes, adding three assists and one rebound. She is averaging 17.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game while shooting 34 percent (16 of 47) from 3-point range in four games this season.
Gregg led all players with 12 rebounds and added four points, two assists, and a block in 29 minutes before picking up her fifth foul. She is averaging 11.5 rebounds, 6.3 points, and 2.5 assists in four games.
Freshman Tyra Holyan posted nine points, seven rebounds, two blocks and a steal in 35 minutes. She leads the Cougars in scoring at 18.5 ppg and is also averaging 6.3 rebounds, 2.8 steals, and 1.8 blocks in four games.
Freshman Janelle Smith came off the bench to produce eight points and six rebounds in 23 minutes, while freshman Jayden Lynch had five points, seven rebounds, two assists, and two steals in 31 minutes.
Freshman Genesis Rios registered seven points and two rebounds, freshman Victoria Benito had three points, and freshman Saleen Rios added two points, two rebounds, an assist, and a steal.
