Cougar Sophomore Valery Velazauez Signs with Berkeley College

Sophomore Valery Velazquez of the South Mountain Community College women's basketball team has signed with Berkeley College (NY) of the United States Collegiate Athletic Association to continue her intercollegiate basketball career. Velazquez, a 5-4 guard from Los Cabos, Mexico, who prepped at Chandler High School, appeared in 49 games over two seasons at SMCC and averaged 4.7 points per game.
Velazquez appeared in 27 games and made 15 starts in the recently completed 2024-25 season. She averaged 6.0 points and 2.3 rebounds per game for the season, and 4.7 points and 2.2 rebounds in 17 ACCAC games in which she made seven starts.
Velazquez scored in double-figures five times as a sophomore, including a career-high 17 points against Williston State College on Dec. 20. She grabbed a season-high six rebounds at Phoenix College on Feb. 12, and recorded a season-high three steals three times.
As a freshman, Velazquez appeared in 22 games and made four starts. She averaged 3.2 points and 1.3 rebounds per game, and scored a season-high 12 points and four assists against Phoenix College. Velazquez grabbed a season-high five rebounds vs. Central Arizona and had three games with two steals.
The Berkeley College Knights compete in the Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. They finished 14-11 overall and 5-3 in HVIAC action in 2024-25.
