SMCC Men's Basketball Rebounds With Win over Park-Gilbert (JV)

PHOENIX ---

The South Mountain Community College men's basketball team (11-2) defeated Park-Gilbert (JV) 109-49 in a non-conference game at the SMCC Gym on Saturday, Dec. 13. Sophomore Blake Carabio scored a team-high 23 points, and four other Cougars reached double-figures as the Cougars led wire-to-wire over the Buccaneers.

SMCC led 58-19 at halftime after shooting 60 percent (25 of 40) from the field while limiting Park-Gilbert to 20.8 percent (5 of 24). The Cougars put together a 50-31 second half behind 51.4 percent (19 of 37) shooting, and finished the game at 55.8 percent (43 of 77).

SMCC totaled 53 rebounds, 25 assists, 14 steals, and one block in the victory. The Cougars held a 56-6 advantage in points scored in the paint and posted 37 points from 24 Park-Gilbert turnovers. SMCC grabbed 23 offensive rebounds and converted them into 27 second-chance points.

"It's always better to go into the break with a win rather than a loss, and it was good to see an offensive performance like that today," said SMCC head coach Cory Hoff. "However, we did not defend to our standard, and that is concerning. We have a lot to clean up over these next two weeks before we get back on the court against a big-time opponent at home. I am proud of our guys for going 11-2 into the break, but we know there is more out there for us. We appreciate all of the support we are getting from the community."

Carabio was 8 of 15 overall and tied a season high with five 3-pointers in 25 minutes off the bench. He added five rebounds, four assists, and three steals.

Sophomore Parker Escalante was second on the team with 18 points, shooting 7 of 9 from the floor in 28 minutes. He added a career-high seven steals, four assists, and three rebounds.

Freshmen I'yar Shadowvine and Jadden Jones each posted 12 points. The point total represented a new season high for Jones, who recorded his first double-double of the year by adding 10 rebounds. He also had three assists and two steals in 30 minutes. Shadowvine knocked down four 3-pointers in 14 minutes and added three rebounds and two assists.

Freshman Travis Vasquez was the fifth Cougar in double-figures, scoring 10 points on 5 of 10 shooting in 25 minutes. He led SMCC with five assists and added four rebounds and a block.

Freshman Eric Butler just missed a double-double, recording nine points and 10 rebounds in 20 reserve minutes. He also had two assists and a steal. Freshman Dylan Eaddy posted nine points and six rebounds, all on the offensive glass, in 17 minutes.
