SMCC Men's Basketball Posts 67-56 Road Win over Chandler-Gilbert CC

PHOENIX ---

Freshman Dylan Eaddy scored a season-high 23 points to help lead the South Mountain Community College men's basketball team (21-4, 10-3 ACCAC Division II) to a 67-56 road victory over Chandler-Gilbert CC on Saturday, Feb. 7. Freshman Travis Vasquez added 12 points and freshman Semajay James grabbed 11 rebounds for SMCC as the Cougars won the season series against the Coyotes.

The Cougars led 32-26 at halftime and won the second half 35-30. SMCC shot 46.4 percent (26 of 56) from the field and 42.3 percent (11 of 26) from 3-point range. The Cougars finished with 31 rebounds, 18 assists, six steals, and one block in the victory.

"We tell our guys all the time that road games are street fights, and this was the definition of it. To go on the road, get called for 12 more fouls, and watch your opponent shoot 20 more free throws while still finding a way to win by double digits, is a testament to our guys," said SMCC head coach Cory Hoff. "They battled through heavy adversity and did not get rattled. I'm proud of their composure and defensive effort."

Eaddy was 9 of 12 overall and 5 of 8 from downtown in 24 minutes to set a new season high with 23 points. The five 3-pointers were also a new season best, and he added three rebounds and a steal in the victory.

Vasquez finished 5 of 12 from the field with a 3-pointer in 29 minutes. He added three assists, two rebounds, and a steal.

Freshman Jadden Jones played nearly all 40 minutes and posted five points, nine rebounds, three assists, and a steal. James led SMCC with 11 rebounds and added three points, two assists, and a steal in 16 minutes off the bench.

"There were a lot of great performances that won't show up in the stat sheet. I'm so proud of how confident Dylan played tonight. I'm glad that everyone got to see what we already know - that he's a really good player," Hoff added. "For Jadden to play 39 minutes and defend like that - I believe he's the best defensive player in the conference. We have a huge road contest on Wednesday before returning to the Cougar Den on Saturday. We look forward to seeing a packed house."

Sophomore Blake Carabio scored nine points off the bench in 22 minutes, adding two rebounds, two steals, and one assist. Freshman I'yar Shadowvine led SMCC with five assists and added four points and two rebounds in 22 minutes, and freshman Devone Pless had six points and a block.

Sophomore Parker Escalante was second on the team with four assists and chipped in five points and two rebounds off the bench.
