The South Mountain Community College men's basketball team (10-2, 3-1 ACCAC Division II) lost 82-61 to No. 10 Pima CC in an ACCAC Division II home contest on Wednesday, Dec. 10. Freshman Travis Vasquez led the Cougars with 17 points and sophomores Blake Carabio and Parker Escalante finished in double-figures, but the Aztecs used a strong first half to post the conference road victory.
Pima CC built a 50-28 lead at halftime behind 63 percent (17 of 27) shooting from the floor, including 80 percent (8 of 10) from 3-point range. SMCC won the second half 33-32 and finished the game shooting 33.3 percent (22 of 66) from the floor. The Cougars totaled 35 rebounds, five assists, and eight steals in defeat.
SMCC forced 18 Aztec turnovers, which it converted into 22 points, and SMCC posted 18 second-chance points off 15 offensive rebounds.
Vasquez scored 15 of his 17 points in the second half while playing all 20 minutes. He finished 6 of 12 overall and 3 of 5 from 3-point range to post his seventh game in double-figures. He added five rebounds, three steals, and an assist in 33 minutes.
Carabio came off the bench to score 12 points on 4 of 10 shooting in 26 minutes. He added two rebounds, one assist, one steal, and one 3-pointer. He has scored in double figures eight times this year.
Escalante scored all of his 11 points in the first half and added three rebounds in 22 minutes. He has finished in double figures seven times this season.
Freshman Jadden Jones grabbed five rebounds to tie for the team lead with Vasquez, and he added two assists and a steal. Freshman Devone Pless scored eight points, all in the second half, and added three rebounds in 20 minutes off the bench.
Freshman I'yar Shadowvine had seven points, two rebounds, and a steal, and freshman Dylan Eaddy produced three points, four rebounds, and a steal.
