Cougar Men's Basketball Picks Up Road Win at Phoenix College
PHOENIX ---
The South Mountain Community College men's basketball team improved to 17-3 and 7-2 in ACCAC Division II play with a 68-54 victory at Phoenix College on Wednesday, Jan. 21. Freshman Blake Carabio led SMCC with 14 points, knocking down three 3-pointers, while sophomore Parker Escalante had 12 points and freshmen I'yar Shadowvine and Semajay James posted 10 points apiece in an important road victory.
"We tell our guys that road games are street fights, and that is what this game felt like. It was an emotional game, and I thought we handled it for 30 minutes," said SMCC head coach Cory Hoff. "We had a bad stretch in each half that we need to clean up. I thought we had too many turnovers, but I love seeing four guys score in double figures. It was a better defensive effort tonight, and credit to our guys for being +26 on the glass. There's no time for rest because we hit the road Saturday for an important game in the standings. We hope our fans will make the trip to come support the team."
SMCC led 41-33 at halftime and won the second half 27-21. The Cougars shot 48.1 percent (25 of 52) from the field and 35.3 percent (6 of 17) from 3-point range. SMCC finished with 46 rebounds, 14 of which came on the offensive end, and added 17 assists, two steals, and two blocks in the victory.
