Bio

Marcus Smith was named South Mountain Community College men's golf head coach in October 2023. He later accepted the role of women's golf head coach in August 2024. 

Smith has continued the Cougars' tradition of excellence in his tenure. SMCC's Jorge Parada (2025) and Dillon Dean (2024) won the Phil Mickelson NJCAA Division II Freshman of the Year awards and  transferred to NCAA Division I programs Eastern Michigan and UNLV, respectively. Smith was a finalist for the Dave Williams NJCAA Division II National Coach of the Year award in 2024 and 2025, and received 2025 ACCAC Coach of the Year honors. 

The team placed third at the 2025 NJCAA National Championships at Swan Lake Resort in Plymouth, Ind., and four Cougars (Parada-First, Jaxson Wright-Second, Adam Croix-Honorable Mention, and PJ Segerstrom-Honorable Mention) earned NJCAA All-America honors. Parada received 2025 ACCAC Player of the Year and First Team PING All-America honors, and Croix earned a Second Team PING All-America award. Smith helped guide the Cougars to eight victories in 2025, including six of their last seven tournaments by 140 total strokes, and two other top-three finishes in his second season at the helm

The SMCC men's team finished fourth at the 2024 NJCAA Division II National Championships and freshman Dillon Dean earned First Team All-America honors after placing second individually at the event. Sophomore Eric Klutke received Honorable Mention All-America honors at the tournament. The Cougars won the ACCAC Region I Division II title and captured the team title at their six other spring tournaments. 

Smith came to SMCC after spending three seasons as the men's and women's golf head coach at Pima CC in Tucson. Smith helped lead the Aztec men to the 2022 and 2023 NCAA Region I Division I Championships, and the team advanced to the NJCAA Division I National Championships in all three seasons.

On the women's side, his 2022 team finished as Region I Division I runners-up and competed at the NJCAA Division I National Championships in all three seasons.

Smith also served on the Pima CC Administrative Leadership Team and provided game management, educational support and other administrative duties for the Pima CC athletic department.

Off the course, Smith is an English instructor at South Mountain CC. He is also the author of "Dream Big, Live Larger."

Smith received his Bachelor's Degree in English from the University of Arizona in 2022. He is pursuing a Master's Degree in English with an emphasis in Education at Grand Canyon University.
