Quinton Breuer, SMCC Men's Golf Claim Puma Spring Classic Titles

Freshman Quinton Breuer of the South Mountain Community College men's golf team won the Puma Spring Classic at -6 (136) over Feb. 24-25 at Encanto Golf Course in Phoenix. Sophomore Luke Padilla and freshman Hudson Ross tied for fifth at -1 (139), and sophomore PJ Segerstrom was 10th at +1 (141) as the Cougars edged Eastern Arizona by four strokes to win the team title at -2 (558).
 
In the first round, Breuer rebounded from a tough start of two birdies and four bogeys to card seven birdies over the final 11 holes. He posted six birdies on the back nine, including the final three holes, to finish at four-under 66.
 
Breuer's second round featured an eagle three on the par-five No. 8 and two birdies as he posted a two-under 68. He defeated Paradise Valley's Gael Quesada and Eastern Arizona's Pavel Casas by two strokes for Individual Medalist honors.
 
Padilla had four birdies in his first round as he finished at even-par 70. He improved to five birdies in his second round to card a one-under 69 and tie for fifth with four other players, including his teammate Ross.
 
Ross was steady throughout the two rounds and had two birdies in his first round to finish at one-under 69. He added one more birdie in his second and closed at even-par 70 to tie with Padilla and secure a top-five result.
 
Segerstrom opened with a one-under 69 behind four birdies. He posted a two-over 72 in the second round and finished at +1 (141).
 
Freshman Tyler Weihe was 12th at +6 (146) with rounds of 72 and 74. He had three birdies in both rounds.
 
Freshman Dane Glesbrecht tied for 17th at +10 (150) with scores of 72 and 78. He carded six birdies in his first round and added three more in the second.
 
The Cougars claimed their first spring title with team scores of three-under 277 and one-over 281. SMCC held a 10-stroke lead over the Gila Monsters after 18 holes and held off their charge in the second round.
