No. 2 SMCC Men's Golf Captures Region I Division II Championship

The No. 2 South Mountain Community College men's golf team won the NJCAA Region I Division II Tournament Championship with a final team score of +1 (1,137) over four rounds of golf April 20-23 at Ocotillo Golf Course in Chandler, Ariz. Freshman Quinton Breuer placed second at -4 (280), freshman Hudson Ross was third at -2 (282), and sophomore PJ Segerstrom tied for fifth at +3 (287) to pace the Cougars as they claimed the Regional Championship by 33 strokes over second-place Mesa CC.
 
Breuer carded rounds of 67, 70, 71, and 72 on the par-71 course over the four days. He and Segerstrom were tied for the individual lead on day one after Breuer posted six birdies, three on both the front and back nine. Day two saw Breuer add another five birdies to his total, and he posted another two in his third round. On the final day, he finished with three birdies but could not hold off a charge from Chandler-Gilbert's Max Palmer for individual medalist. Palmer closed with a four-under 67 to leapfrog both Breuer and Ross and claim the tournament title with a final score of -7 (277).
 
Ross was third at -2 with rounds of 69, 70, 70, and 73 and joined Palmer and Breuer as the only golfers to finish under-par at the event. He had five birdies in his first round, four in his second, and five in his third round to sit in second place entering the final day. Ross carded a pair of birdies on the front nine and ultimately finished third at -2 (282) after a final-round score of +2 (73).
 
Segerstrom posted scores of 67, 74, 75, and 71 en route to a tie for fifth with PVCC's Gael Quesada. He carded six birdies in his first round to tie with Breuer for the tournament lead, and added three birdies in his second and third rounds. He recorded another three birdies in his final round to finish at E (71).
 
Freshman Cooper Perkinson placed eighth at +9 (293) with rounds of 69, 74, 81, and 69. He posted five birdies in his first round and added three birdies in his second round. After a tough third day, he rebounded strongly in the fourth round with four birdies to post a two-under 69 and move up one spot on the final leaderboard.
 
Freshman Kaedon Smith played three rounds for SMCC and carded scores of 72, 76 and 78. He had two birdies in each of the three rounds. Sophomore Luke Padilla played round four and posted a score of even-par 71. He had two birdies on the front nine.
 
SMCC opened with a team score of 12-under 272 to take a 19-stroke lead over second-place Chandler-Gilbert CC. The Cougars continued to build on their lead by seven strokes with a team score of 288 in their second round. The third round saw SMCC post a 294 to pick up another two strokes, and the Cougars recorded a one-under 283 in the fourth and final round.
