No. 4 SMCC Men's Golf, Cooper Perkinson Win Mesa Thunderbirds Spring Classic Titles

The No. 4 South Mountain Community College men's golf team won the Mesa Thunderbirds Spring Classic at -31 (545) over Mar. 16-17 at Dobson Ranch Golf Course in Mesa, Ariz. Freshman Cooper Perkinson captured individual medalist honors at the event, posting a winning score of -11 (133) with rounds of 69 and 64. Sophomore PJ Segerstrom and freshman Hudson Ross tied for fourth at -7 (137), freshman Quinton Breuer tied for seventh at -5 (139), and the Cougars posted a 22-under 266 in the second round to win the team title by 14 strokes.
SMCC sat in second place at nine-under 279 after 18 holes, one stroke behind Eastern Arizona. The second round saw SMCC storm past the Gila Monsters behind outstanding work from Perkinson, Breuer, and Segerstrom, who combined to finish -19 for the round.
Perkinson opened with a three-under 69 that featured five birdies. In his second round, Perkinson birdied two of the first three holes and posted an eagle three on the par-five No. 5. After a bogey on the par-three No. 7, he carded five birdies over the final 10 holes to capture individual medalist honors.
Segerstrom opened with a three-under 69 behind five birdies, including three over the first five holes. In round two, he went bogey-free and posted four birdies, including three over the final six holes, to post a top-five finish.
Ross carded a four-under 68 in his first round, posting an eagle three on the par-five No. 1 and five birdies. In round two, he recorded five more birdies to finish at three-under 69 and match Segertrom on the final scoreboard.
Breuer produced a nine-stroke improvement from his first round to his second as he tied for seventh overall. In round one, Breuer had two birdies and eagled the par-five No. 13 but finished at two-over 74. He then went bogey-free in his second round and carded seven birdies to post a 65.
Freshman Kaedon Smith moved up six spots on the final leaderboard to tie for 14th at E (144) with scores of one-over 73 and one-under 71. He had six birdies in his first round and added four more in his second.
Freshman Tyler Weihe tied for 17th at +1 (145) with scores of three-under 69 and four-over 76. His first round featured six birdies, and he added two more in his second round.
