No. 2 SMCC Men's Golf Places Second at Gila Monster Shootout, Win ACCAC Division II Title

The No. 2 South Mountain Community College men's golf team finished second at -4 (860) at the Gila Monster Shootout over April 13-14 at Mt. Graham Golf Course in Safford, Ariz. Sophomore PJ Segerstrom paced the Cougars with a third-place finish, carding a -2 (214) over 54 holes. Freshman Quinton Breuer placed fourth at +1 (217), freshman Kaedon Smith was eighth at +3 (219), and Cooper Perkinson was +4 (220) to earn top-10 finishes as the Cougars wrapped up the ACCAC Division II title.
 
The Cougars had a strong third round at the event, highlighted by solid performances from Segerstrom and Breuer. Segerstrom moved up final spots on the final leaderboard with a three-under 69 that featured five birdies, including three of the final four holes. He opened the event with a one-under 71 that had three birdies, and posted a two-over 74 in his second round with an eagle three on the par-five No. 14.
 
Breuer closed with a two-under 70 with five birdies in the third round to leap seven spots in the final standings. He opened with an eight-over 80 that featured three birdies, and then carded a five-under 67 in round two with seven birdies.
 
Smith posted two rounds of two-over 74 sandwiched around a one-under 71 in the second round. In the first round, he had four birdies and followed that up with five birdies in his second round. The final round saw Smith birdie three of his final five holes to finish eighth.
 
Perkinson had a tougher third round than his teammates, but a solid performance over the opening 36 holes helped him secure a top-10 finish. He had one birdie in his first round to finish at one-over 73, and then added six birdies in the second round to card a two-under 70. He had one birdie in his third round to finish at five-over 77.
 
Freshman Dane Glesbrecht tied for 12th at +6 (222). He opened with a three-over 75 with three birdies, and added four birdies in his second round to post another 75. He improved by three strokes in round three, posting an even-par 72 behind four birdies.
 
SMCC sat 11 strokes behind Eastern Arizona after 18 holes and trailed by 13 after round two. The Cougars picked up seven strokes on the host Gila Monsters in round three, but it was not enough to catch EAC for the team title. Despite that, SMCC won the ACCAC Division II Conference Championship after winning four spring tournaments. Perkinson (twice), Breuer, and Smith all claimed individual medalist honors for tournament wins during the season.
