Cooper Perkinson, No. 2 SMCC Men's Golf Win Chandler-Gilbert Coyote Classic

The No. 2 South Mountain Community College men's golf team won the Chandler-Gilbert Coyote Classic with a final team score of -15 (561) on Mar. 31 and Apr. 1 at Toka Sticks Golf Course in Mesa, Ariz. Freshman Cooper Perkinson captured individual medalist honors, his second-straight tournament victory, with a final score of -7 (137). Freshman Quinton Breuer tied for second at -6 (138), sophomore PJ Segerstrom tied for sixth at -1 (143), and freshman Hudson Ross tied for ninth at +1 (145) to help lead the Cougars to the tournament title.
Perkinson opened with a six-under 66 to tie for the tournament lead after one day. He had seven birdies in the round, including five of the final seven holes. In his second round, Perkinson carded three more birdies en route to a one-under 71 and one-stroke victory on the final leaderboard.
Breuer posted identical scores of three-under 69 each day. He had five birdies in his first round and five more in his second round, plus an eagle three on the par-five No. 17. He finished one shot behind Perkinson and tied with Mesa CC's Kush Shah.
Segerstrom tied with Perkinson after day one, carding a six-under 66 behind five birdies and an eagle three on par-five No. 17. He had three birdies in his second round and finished at five-over 77 to tie for sixth.
Ross recorded rounds of one-over 73 and even-par 72. He had four birdies in his first round, and added four more in his second round, plus an eagle three on the par-five No. 2.
Freshman Tyler Weihe tied for 18th at +7 (151) with scores of four-over 76 and three-over 75. He had one birdie in his first round and posted two more in his second round, plus an eagle two on the par-four No. 14.
Freshman Lucian Meller was 21st at +9 (153) with rounds of six-over 78 and three-over 75. He had a birdie and an eagle three on the par-five No. 17 in his first round, and added two more birdies on the second day.
SMCC opened with a 14-under 274 on day one to hold a four-stroke lead over Eastern Arizona. The Cougars posted a one-under 277 on day two, the only team to finish under par, to win the event by 12 strokes over the Gila Monsters.
