SMCC Men's Golf Ties for Sixth At Herb Wimberly Invitational

The South Mountain Community College men's golf team tied for sixth at +14 (866) at the Herb Wimberly Memorial at the NM State Golf Course on Oct. 14-15 in Las Cruces, N.M. The Cougars moved up five spots on the leaderboard over the final 18 holes with a team score of -6 (278), the second-best round of the day and the best round by any team except for host and tournament winner New Mexico State. Individually, sophomore Jorge Parada led the charge in round three for SMCC with a two-under 69 to move up 16 spots on the leaderboard and tie for 16th at the event.  

SMCC opened with a +8 (292) on the par-71 course and followed that up with a +12 (296) in the second round as they played 36 holes on Oct. 14. The next day, the Cougars roared back with their 278 to join the Aggies as the only school to post a team score under 280. 

Parada posted scores of 71, 74, and 69 to finish at +1 (214) and tie for 16th. He had an eagle three on the par-five No. 4 and a birdie on No. 18 to finish his first round and added two birdies in the second. In the third, Parada posted three birdies on the front nine and added a fourth on par-five No. 15 to finish the day at -2 (69). 

Freshman Jaxson Wright posted the third-best score of round three with a four-under 67 to move up 21 spots on the leaderboard and tie for 30th at +3 (216). He had a birdie in each of his first two rounds to post scores of +3 (74) and +4 (75), respectively. However, he closed the tournament in a fury with four birdies on the front nine and two birdies over the back nine to card the 67.  

Freshman Kenny Taylor tied for 33rd at +4 (217) with scores of 75, 69, and 73. He had one birdie in the first round and followed that up with an eagle three on the par-five No. 3 and three birdies in the second round. Finally, he had three birdies in his third round and ended the tournament with an eagle two on the par-four No. 18. 

Freshman Adam Croix moved up 12 spots on the final leaderboard with a -2 (69) in his third round to tie for 43rd at +6 (219). He opened with a +1 (72) and three birdies and added one in his second round to finish with a +7 (78). However, on the tournament's second day, he had two birdies on the front nine and three on the back nine to finish two strokes under par. 

Freshman James Rogers was 75th at +22 (235) with rounds of 78, 81, and 76. He had a birdie in each of his first two rounds and closed the event with two birdies in his final round.
