Cougar Women's Volleyball Falls to Pima CC, Glendale CC

PHOENIX ---

The South Mountain Community College women's volleyball team (1-12, 0-8 ACCAC) lost 3-0 at Pima CC on Oct. 8 and 3-1 to No. 12 Glendale CC at home on Oct. 10 in a pair of ACCAC matches last week. Freshman Julia AbdelSalam led SMCC with five kills, and freshman Keira Allen posted a team-high nine digs in the loss to the Aztecs. Against the nationally ranked Gauchos, the Cougars stormed back to win set one and freshman Talullah Johnson led SMCC with eight kills, and AbdelSalam added seven kills and a season-high 18 digs. 

Glendale CC Recap

Trailing late in set one, the Cougars pulled off a 25-23 victory as the team finished with 15 kills. GCC won the following three sets (25-17, 25-19, 25-18) to take the match. SMCC finished with 43 kills, 38 assists, seven service aces, 73 digs, four solo blocks, and two block assists over the four sets. 

Johnson hit .192 for the match in 26 swings, finishing with eight kills and three attack errors. She matched a season high with four assists and added eight digs and one block assist. 

Abdelsalam had seven kills on 34 attacks, while the 18 digs set a new season high and was the fourth time she reached double-figures. She also posted a solo block and a service ace. 

Sophomore Abby Kilpatrick also produced seven kills, hitting .125 on 32 swings. She added three digs and a solo block. Fellow sophomore Alyssa Szymanski was the third Cougar to finish with seven kills, and she added six digs. Sophomore Amanda Mitan had four kills and a block assist. 

Freshman Allie Encinas set a new season high with 19 assists and added eight digs and a service ace. Sophomore Ailynn Solis finished with 12 assists, eight digs, and two kills. Allen was second on the squad with 15 digs and added five assists and a service ace. 

Pima CC Recap 

The Aztecs defeated the Cougars in straight sets on Oct. 8: 25-22, 25-16, and 25-6. 

Abdelsalam had five kills on 14 attacks and added five digs and a block assist, while Szymanski had four kills in 14 swings with two digs.

Mitan had three kills, two digs, an assist, and a block assist, while sophomore Esra Bryant had two kills, an assist, a dig, and three block assists. 

Encinas finished with five assists, three service aces, and a dig, and Solis posted four assists and five digs. Allen led the Cougars with nine digs and added three assists.
