SMCC Women's Volleyball Falls to Central Arizona, Phoenix College

The South Mountain Community College women's volleyball team fell 3-0 to Central Arizona on Oct. 1 and 3-2 to Phoenix College on Oct. 3 in a pair of home matches at the SMCC Gymnasium last week. Freshman Talullah Johnson led SMCC with eight kills, and sophomore Alyssa Szymanski added seven in the loss to the Vaqueras. Two days later, freshman Julia Abdelsalam posted a double-double with 12 kills and 10 digs, and sophomore Esra Bryant recorded nine kills and 11 block assists in a five-set loss to the Bears. 

Central Arizona Recap

The Cougars fell in straight sets to Central Arizona in a non-conference match: 25-23, 25-18, and 25-17. SMCC finished with 28 kills, 26 assists, six service aces, 49 digs, and 10 block assists over the three sets. 

Johnson hit .161 on 31 attacks, posting eight kills and three attack errors. She also had three service aces, three digs, and an assist. 

Szymanski posted seven kills and four errors on 26 swings to post a .115 hitting percentage. She added four digs and a block assist. 

Sophomore Abby Kilpatrick recorded four kills, three digs, and a block assist, and fellow sophomore Amanda Mitan had three kills, two digs, and a service assist. 

Freshman Allie Encinas led the Cougars with 10 assists and added three digs and a service ace. Sophomore Ailynn Solis posted nine assists and eight digs, and freshman Ava Moreno finished with nine digs and four assists. 

Phoenix College Recap

The Cougars and Bears engaged in a back-and-forth affair, with PC ultimately prevailing in five sets: 15-25, 25-17, 14-25, 25-22, and 15-12. SMCC finished with 47 kills, 44 assists, eight service aces, 74 digs, one solo block, and 30 block assists. 

Abdelsalam came off the bench to provide a spark for the Cougars. She posted a season-high 12 kills on 32 attacks to finish with a .250 hitting percentage, and added 10 digs to record her first career double-double. She also recorded five block assists and an assist. 

Bryant set a new season best with nine kills, six digs, and 11 block assists over the five sets. Kilpatrick also set a new season high by posting seven kills on 21 swings to post a .238 hitting percentage. She added three digs, a solo block, and three block assists. 

Freshman Isley Seabrooke was the third Cougar to set a new season high in kills, finishing with seven on 20 attacks to hit .150 for the five sets. She also produced two digs and two block assists.  

Szymanski posted five kills, 16 digs, one assist, one service ace, and five block assists, while Johnson had three kills, two service aces, and five digs. Mitan had three kills, seven digs, and four block assists. 

Solis led SMCC with 24 assists and added nine digs and a service ace, while Encinas had 16 assists, four service aces, and two digs. Freshman Keira Allen matched her season best with 10 digs and added two assists.
